Breeding process?
My friend and i want to breed our RTB's. He has a pair of 7 year olds that are male and female, have been seperate for the past 5 months, but lived together prior to that. We want to know what the correct way to go about breeding them. I've read that lowering the temps and introducing them gets it started, but when do we start that? i cant seem to find a caresheet anywhere that DEFINES how to breed them. Of course im a junior in HS right now, he is too, my RTB is a yearling, 3 feet long. Im planning to breed it when i get out of college, possibly into the breeding hobby of my BP as well.

i wouldnt start breeding right now if ur only in jr high. not a good deal because it will involve a ton a money, time and resources that you need to be ready for. Read up on it from different sources ie here, libraries, website....
if this is the same friend with the now dead ball, rethink what you are about to do and the end results. i just hope it is not for money.

Ok I missed something you said in a earlier thread that your friend didnt take care of his reptiles the best he could???
Quote:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Well my friends BP died on sunday...he slept over at my house because we were going to leave my house with my dad at 4 am to go watch eagles feed down the illinois river at starved rock, but we decided not to go due to snow issues. We went back to his house and found his BP upside down, in rigor mortis (firm bodied, stiff) and it looked like it was biting itself. We took it out and it looked like it bit itself, and the saliva seemed to be an adheasive like dried hot glue.
Back last winter he fasted, for like 8 months, and he was a fraction of his best size when i finally got him to feed. My friend was on vacation, it was in the winter, and i threw a rat in there, and he finally had interest. Back 2 years ago he was a full bodied, long BP, and he got me into snakes and reptiles, which lead to a plea to my dad and the eventual BP in june of 2003, who is now starting to eat finickily.
Possible causes of death:
1. Temperatures: he had no real heat source at the time, probably would have gotten warmer if he didnt die considering we were going to put a heat pad in his cage. But the room temp was like 70 at least, so i dont see how temps can be a problem...
2. Dehydration: maybe he didnt soak, i dunno, but my friend said that his BP ate at least a rat a week, and he was trying to powerfeed a little bit to get his fasted weight back. But u figure he had plenty of fluids from the rats...Whom by the way are usually quite wet (f/t)
3. Overall health depletion: He was an old BP, probably 5 years old, maybe older, but he had scars, and a lot of hardships in his day, my friend doesnt exactly take the best care of his reptiles, although i must say he does the best he can.
Well im hoping i can maybe figure this one out in order to improve our knowledge and hope to correct the problem for the future. "Mr.Cuddles" serves me ad a martyr that got me into all of this. The Docile old boy will never be forgotten.

How to breed boas? pthhhh I wish I could get a grip on how not to. I swear boa sperm goes airborn and impregnates snakes across the room.
There is no need to cool them. Some say it helps a bit but I think that it depends on how you keep your snakes. Slightly cooling will cause them to move around more looking for places to thermoregulate...while moving around, boy meets girl. If you have night time drops like you should, they do all this anyway. Mainly they go by the rainy season and day night cycle. Shorten the daytime cycle and increase humidity and baby boas will occur...but not now grasshoppah...finish school first.

Can a single male impregnate multiple females? If so what would a common "stud" RTB need to be effective?
Initially breeding for money sounds like an illconceived idea IMO. To properly take care of a breeding pair takes much & over the period of time you are talking about. You can't skimp on their care/husbandry so forget about the money thing. In addition if you female "common" RTB drops 30 neos you will either need to have them pre-sold or wholesale them for about $30.00 ea if you are lucky. $900.00 for a clutch is no way making money.

Can a single male impregnate multiple females? yes and even within a relatively short time. Up to 3 females is generally what I consider safe to keep him in that sort of of mode...after that, I want him back in seclusion thinking about food. What does he need? GIRLS! Big fat bootyful GIRLS!

if someone walked up to you right now and gave you 30 snakes... could you house them? feed them?
if not, I would rethink this idea thats a lot of snakes to feed, lot of cages and lots of heat pads.
There is so much more to just letting them do their biz.
What if you cant sell them right away? how long can you afford to keep 30 babies around?

Haha. Sorry, I couldn't help but laugh at that statement.
On a more serious note, consider how much it cost to feed your pair of rtb's weekly. Now multiply that by 30. Can you really afford to house that many snakes?
