Buy some frozen rats(appropriately sized)....thaw one then get some tongs and wave it in front of the snake. If you can't get f/t buy live..kill it...stick it in the freezer untill feeding time. Then follow the advice 1st given. Ususally Boas arent hard to convert over to F/T. If there is a problem then come back and tell us, and we'll tell you where to go from there.

Mine made the switch quite easily. I was feeding live before I knew any better. I unfortunately found out the hard way about the dangers of feeding live prey, when a rodent decided to defend itself, and caused an injury to my beloved friend. It made me quite upset with myself because I knew that the injury was my fault, and was caused as a result of my poor judgement. After administering medication for a few weeks my snake made a complete recovery. I would advise you to learn from my mistakes and make the switch to frozen/thawed rats now. Mice are not an appropriate meal for a Boa, from a nutritional standpoint.
I'm somewhat embarrassed to admit that I used to think that feeding live was cool. I now believe that it is far "cooler" to have a f/t prey item snatched from the holds of my forceps. It makes me jump every time. Good luck with the switch!

Good job. The advice on mice is way to true. Switch to rats on the next feeding, but NEVER feed a live rat. You're even playing with fire with fresh whacked as they can come to and be really upset.
www.rodentpro.com is a great place to get frozen feeders. AFTER shipping costs are factored in, 2 or three bags of rodents in one order usually factor out to about a $1.50 per feeding.
Good luck!

Get your frozen feeder out. Put it in a container of some sort... I use a tupperware dish. Get the tap water as hot as you can stand to the touch (you don't want to cook your prey item), and soak it for 15-20 min. To ensure the rat is thawed, feel the head when you take it out of the water, as the brain is the last to thaw. If it's warm, I like to do a pat dry and then feed. If it's still cool, feel the water in the container. Sometimes the water cools down to mcuh to be effective, so just repeat the process above, but for a shorter period of time.

Well, have you ever been hit so hard you got knocked out and got a bloddy nose? Did you wake up? It's possible unless if you hit them so hard that brain moosh explodes out where thier eye once was. He ain't gettin' up from that! LOL (I had that happen to me before I realized how much better F/T was). | |
