Smile F/T Food

Hi everyone,

How long can F/T food be left in the cage before it goes bad? How long do you give the snake to decide that it wants to eat it?

This is the way that I have been doing it, I take the mice out and let them thaw to room temp and then feed. Sometimes I'll have a picky eater, or maybe someone just is hungry, I'll leave the mouse in with them for about 2 hours, if they haven't eaten by then, I'll sometimes offer the mouse to one of the other guys that looks like it isn't quite full. But, I don't leave the mouse out for more then 2 hours or so after it has been offered.

Is the way I do it ok? Any other ideas?

Thanks, james

While the mouse is sitting out defrosting at room temperature, its also starting to decay. Your better off to defrost in very warm tap water directly from frozen. The warm prey will spur the feeding response allot more than 70 degree prey that to a snake may be starting to stink.

Once offerend i will leave the prey in overnight, just dont let it sit on or under the heat source, it will wreek by morning. But when i offer the prey very warm it rarely lasts 5 minutes.

I heat mine up in a tub over heat tape, so their nice and warm. Then offer them to the boas off of tongs. Wiggling them makes them more interested in a f/t. You can also use the f/t rodent somwhere else if one is not hungry, (it has not touched the boa or its enclosure). I'd recomend against letting one sit in one cage and then giving it to another boa. If one snake has touched it, and doesnt eat it toss it, it's not worth the hassle.
