temp gun
Hey people, I'd like to pick your brains about temp guns. Right now the wife and I have enough different animals that I'd really like to get an accurate reading instead of just using the various strips. Are their any types that you really like? Any that just plain sucked? I know with our various critters what the cool side and basking sites should be but what temp should the actual snake be? I guess I'm mainly asking about my ball and boa. Thanks for the help.

I use this brand, have for years.
They have many models in all price ranges.
As far as snake temps go, its going to vary.
I cant say i've ever made a mental note on the surface temp of a snake.
Just remember that all these temp guns register is surface temp.

Temp guns are a must have deal.... Just get your self a $25 temp gun they work great. Your snakes will be a temp inbetween the hot and cool temps, but you are not geussing on anything.

I got myself a Raytek gun without the laser. Love the thing...you'd be surprised how warm you're actually keeping the cage at sometimes. While we're on the subject, is there such a thing as as a gun that measures humidity?

In addition to being very useful for cage temps... if you have the larger versions they are equally handy at the race track for tire temps!

so those of you that do use them for your critters, versus being on John Force's pit crew , do you use it mainly for the cage temps or the actual animal? With your various animals if you measure them what is the range directly on them you look for? I'm mainly thinking about my BCI and BP and leopard gecko but would be interested in whatever you all have.

I dont usually actually take a measurement on the snake (just habit I guess) not that its a bad idea.
I use it to do daily "spot checks" on cage temps.
Over the last few years when I decided that most people keep their snakes too hot, I started taking daily readings, and I also note on activity patterns at certain temps.
But im only focusing on a few species for that right now.
Its good to measure the difference between your heat source and actual surface temp.
For my sand boas, I use a large mylar heat pad that is only rated safe upto 135 degree's and without the temp gun and daily checks, I wouldnt of noticed its tendency to get near 148, thus raising the surface temp of the sand to nearly 100 degrees, which was a bit too high in my opinion, so I adjusted the electricity flow to the heat pad accordingly.
Without a good temp gun, I would of probably never caught it, and it may have cause health issues with my snake, or worse, a fire.
they are a great tool, and if you can afford one, and have lots of snakes that you have to monitor temps on, it just makes life all that more easier.
I also use it to test the accuracy of my digital thermometers, you may be suprised at how different the results may be.
