Mites!
I just came from a friends house who got a boa from that website we all know. As soon as I saw it, I saw mites! We went out and bought some Permanone which is supposed to be the same as Provent-a-mite. I never used this stuff before, last time I had a case of mites was 2-3 years ago and I used a product called Black Knight.
I had him soak the snake in warm water while we bought the Permanone at Walmart. We emptied and cleaned the enclosure and sprayed some of this stuff in the cage (man this stuff smells strong). We sealed the cage and let it sit for 30 minutes and air dry for another hour. This stuff still smells strong, should I have him place the snake back in the cage now or wait a certain time?
I also read some good things about a lice product for humans called Nix. Any recommendation on either of these products on which is best?

I have only had mites once but the Permanone treatement worked well. Typically you would leave everything but the snake and the waterbowl in the tank. Spray the tank, seal it up and leave it for about 30 minutes, then open it up to air out for an hour or so. After the hour has passed you can put the snake and water bowl back. The residue will continue to kill of the mites for roughly 2 weeks. If the mites start to reappear in 2 weeks you will need to re-treat.

Permanone seems to be the same thing as Provent-a-mite, same active ingredients. Like Advil and Ibuprofen. When I used BK on my own collection a few years back it worked like a charm! But I understand they stopped selling it due to some legal actions with Provent-a-mite.
After reading a bit, we're going to use a combo of reptile relief on the snake and Permanone in the cage. Reptile Relief seems to only work if the liquid comes in contact with the mites, Permethrin the active ingredient in Permanone and Provent-a-mite kills mites for 2-4 weeks. I think with a treatment of Permethrin and 2-3 treatments of Reptile Relief should do the trick.
This stuff is pretty strong, I don't remember BK smelling this strong. Is this OK during breeding season? We plan on using this girl with one of my males next month if possible. That is of course after I am 150% sure there are no mites left!

basically what your doing is sufforcating or drowning the mites whether it is a soak or reptile relief.. and to tell you the truth i don't even like reptile relief.
soaking is good. and adding a little betadine wont hurt your snake either.. i just add enough to make a medium to light tea color, the betadine helps with the bites and adds a little infection prevention. and yes the snake will turn a tinted yellow. lol

betadine, never heard of that treatment. I've also read a bit of listerine added to the soak is good for killing mites. I was going to try Nix, but decided to stick with the Permethrin. I'm not too thrilled with the Reptile Relief, but it seemed to work, left a lot of dead mites on the paper towel.
I'd much rather go natural treatments when possible, but didn't have much time to research.
Thanks for the tip.

You would not believe the crap I am getting from other sites on Permanone!
Some people just get flat out offended that anyone would even write that Repel or Sawyers is similar to Provent-a-mite!
I even got some guy telling me I and the forum could face a lawsuit from even suggesting the use of either one of these for the use of killing mites in a reptile enclosure.
I think any product that is misused can be deadly!!

I am partial to provent- a mite since I am friends with the owner. Just want to say that up front.
My thought is why look for anything else? Everyone seems to agree that provent a mite works. I have never heard a story of it hurting a snake if used properly. Why take a chance with anything else? Its only 20 bucks…

I used Provent-a-mite, (sprayed it only once, when everybody reccomends 2x because of mite eggs and whatnot) and i havent seen em since.
I would just use the stuff you are using again 12 days after the first time you sprayed.
That kind of stuff is suppost to kill all mites that enter the enclosure after the time it was sprayed, If you feel any need to order provent-a-mite you should check out www.pythons.com thats where I got mine form.

Just a thought to Natas, this is a product many of the members of this forum use, have you ever thought of purchasing it wholesale and selling it here to members at a discounted price? RTB members save $$$ and RTB gets additional funding?

Thanks, I don't have an issue with Provent-a-mite. I've read nothing but great reviews from everyone that has used it.
I just felt it was easier for me to drive 2 blocks to Wal-Mart and pick up a $4.00 can of Permanone, rather than pay $20+S&H and wait 2-3-4 days for the Provent-a-mite. It's not about the $25.00, it's about my right to a choice.
You could easily kill your snake if you drown it in Reptile Relief or Provent-a-mite as you can by misusing Sawyers, Permanone or even Nix. I just don't think anyone should be harassed or given any crap because they decide to use some other prod | |
