Advice on Breeding? My RTB is Pastel!!!
hey everybody....I recently found out that my female RTB Cinnamon is pastel...She is gaining weight fast and is still very young. I am planning to breed her when she is able...Im going to try and breed to hypo if i get another pastel male...Im looking forward to doing this, but im also new, and inexperienced with breeding CRTB...I have a BP, RTB, and a BD, and i have knowledge about them, and they are all very healthy and fit. But i need advice on Breeding RTB's, and i need to know how it is done and what procedures are taken...
Thanks!

Rather than type a novel about boa breeding here, I'm going to do the next best thing:
Here is a link to a very good article first printed in Reptiles Magazine, 1996, by Jeff Ronne, The Boaphile.
http://www.theboaphile.com/article.html
I also reccomend the Boaphile Breeding Video. It is full of great boa breeding information.

Out of curiosity, what do you mean by this statement? By the way it is written, it seems that you want to get a male pastel to breed to your female pastel to get hypos...this will not work. Or do you mean that if you get a male pastel you are going to get a female hypo to breed him with, too?

Nope, all you'll get is more pastels. Hypo is a completely different trait... my hubby better explain. Oh MORTI!!!

Hehe. Try going to the Redtailboa.net Reptile Education section of the site
Here's the link:
http://redtailboa.net/modules.php?na...istpages&cid=4
That section has some good articles about genetics (most of them written by Morti).

Hypomelanism is a completely seperate trait from Pastel.
Pastl is a color trait in boas that is the result of selective breeding over many generations. Hypomelanism is a genetically inheritable color morph that is co-dominant in nature and can be passed on to offspring in just one generation.
If you want hypos, you have to start with hypos.
Does any of that make sense?

Many Breeders are clueless on what they really have. Or they start inventing names of theirs cuz they look different
As far as Breeding goes, its definately not rocket science with BCIs. Just do night drops for a week or so then put the male in the females cage, and it wont take him long to do the deed. Just make sure the female is old enough and has enough body wieght on her, otherwise she wont ovulate.

I would suggest posting a pic so experienced folks can tell ya what you have if you don't have that information from the previous owner. A photo will tell the truth.
You can breed a co-dominant Hypo to a common or pastel BCI and get Hypos and commons OR you breed a dominant Hypo to it and get Hypos.
However you go you need to be prepared for vet bills, larger feed bills, space and equipment to house 20-60 or more babies and be able to find them all homes too!
