The importation of BC was a concern of mine even back in the 1970's and I know I am one of the early ones to promote captive propagation to relieve pressure on wildcaught BC. Actually, many people got involved in breeding this species because of the economics I promoted and I am sure others have done so indirectly. Simply put and I am not bragging, but rather stating a fact. However, I feel bringing in WC BC and making them available to institutions and responsible breeders can only benefit the species by adding new genes to the pool. There are exceptions, of course, and some of the island imperators should maybe not be collected except under very limited conditions. In the case of
BCC there are still many thousands of square miles where this subspecies inhabits that is virtually untouched by humans, much less have any harvesting occurring. I can see no logical reason to put a taboo on obtaining WC of this form or most of the other subspecies at this time.
I would like to see the wholesale importation of boas discontinue for the Pet trade, per se, but anything short of the species becoming truly endangered or there are more than enough CB common boas available seems to make this unlikely. Unless something has changed in regards to our Federal laws about this species that I am unaware of? Remember, I am just getting back into the swing of things and need to be updated.
