Sonny and I were spending some quality time together today, nothing out of the ordinary happened. He began preening himself, and I noticed he kept going back to this spot and and doing the "tasting face" - you know the one. At first I thought this area was just wet, but at a closer look I noticed the blood.
I did not notice if he pulled out a feather to cause this but it is possible...he wasn't flying into stationary objects and I don't rough house with him. I could not look close enough to tell if it was torn skin or just a pulled feather.
Any Ideas, and can you help me to Not Panic?
Thanks

My roommate and I both looked at the pic and we don't know what or why that is. My B&G macaw is a plucker but he never bleeds like that, even when he pulls out a brand new pin feather. You probably should keep your eye on it for a couple days and if he continues to pick at it, take him to the vet.

OK - thanks Squeezer - I just checked on him again, and it doesn't seem as "wet" at all. I will keep looking in on him periodically before his bedtime and then again first thing in the morning.

its very likely he did pull a blood feather, happens with my birds everyonce in a while, ill notice the same thing on them, just a little blood spot. nothing too big, but id keep some quick stop around just in case, or just take him to the vet for a check up, that never hurts anything

This might sound somewhat ignorant but.. Do birds actually have blood feathers on thier chest? The only blood feathers I know are on the wings and tail. I thought the feathers on the rest of the body were basically pin feathers and didnt know they would bleed like that.
Sonny coulda just got a little rough with hisself and caused a sore.

This morning the rascal is doing fine - no further bleeding of the site so I am greatly relieved.
I looked for my quick stop but was not able to find it, last time I saw it was about 3 moves ago so I will be picking some up today to have on hand.
Thanks for all of your comments.

oops didn't know you posted here too...I got your email and responded to it late last night. sooo for everyone else's info about blood feathers...plucking one isn't near as bad as rupturing one. If they rupture one, it must be plucked immediatly or they will bleed to death. Any bleeding can and should be stopped by either rubbing a styptic pencil, stopit, aluminum sulfate, alum powder ...probably the same stuff as quick stop as refered to by kelly earlier...all these products are the same thing basically.....aluminum sulfate. If you don't have any of that around, flour or cornstarch from the kitchen works too. Just rub it right into the wound anytime a bird id bleeding anywhere. Even if you quick a toenail when trimming...any of these things will stop the bleeding and are safe to use.
Glad he's doing better this morning

I wasn't sure about it being a plucked blood feather becasue when you pull a blood feather, it shuts off the blood supply to that feather, although I guess it would bleed some. Every blood feather I've ever pulled was already broken and bleeding. One of my Alexandrine Parakeets got her toe bitten by one of the Lesser Sulpher Crested 'Toos today . Put some Quik-stop on it and it stopped bleeding. Checked on it again and there was blood on all the perches. She had been picking at it. More Quik-stop. Also has a big bite mark on her beak. Poor girl. Last fall a Scarlet Macaw bit off most of one of her toenails and bit a couple of the male's toes too. Can't they all just get along?

They are actually my roommates birds(she has 2 male, Max and Titus). I don't have any pics of them but they look just like your Bonehead except without the bald spot on the belly. They don't like me and I'm not too crazy about them, especially Titus after he bit Monty today. I ended up taking her to the vet because I couldn't get the bleeding to stop and I had to go to work. Max liked me when we first met but shortly after they moved into my house he got wierd and now he runs from me all the time. Don't know why.
