Re: Exotic birds
A conure, maybe? I dunno much about birds, just know that African Greys are only for a person who can dedicate a LOT of time to them.. most parrots are. They get bored easily and it's apparently like taking care of a two-year old.... that will be two forever..

Re: Exotic birds
I would say check into a senagal parrot. theyre small but extremely amuzing and intelligent birds. My fathers used to pick his lock to get out then go pick the cockatiels lock and let him out. And i do actually mean a key lock that was locked (we used to leave the key in it so we wouldnt loose it, and one day the bugger learned to do it somehow). The only downside is that like all birds they require ALOT of attention and they usually bond to one or two people. My fathers sengal will trust me and him to do what ever we want to him like put him on his back and pet his belly, however he will also try and chance my mother around the house. Like i said very amuzing birds. Awesome pets if you put the effort in and keep spending time with them, even if its only an hour.

Cockatiels are terrific birds and easy to care for.

Re: Exotic birds
I'd say go for a cockatiel. I've never had one but have heard all kinds of good things about them.
I myself have a Lesser Patagonian Conure (largest of the conures) that I rescued 5 years ago. Somebody let her loose or something and I climbed up all the way to a 60ft tall pine tree to get her. I've been her hero since. lol (never found the owner) Noisy though, but I enjoy her a lot. She especially likes bell toys.

Re: Exotic birds
Whats wrong with MACAWS?!
Do NOT get a conure, noisy buggars...
If you want something smallerish, smart, and somewhat able to talk get a Indian Ringneck, these little dudes are a barrel of laughs and come in a variety of colors but nothing extremly flashy
Macaws need good care, I treat mine like a child and he goes everywhere with me...as a result I've never had any noise or behavior problems out of him...he doesn't talk to anyone but me in the middle of the night...and we can be goofy all we want...

Re: Exotic birds
Honestly, I'd stay away from most pet shop birds. Then again, this from a position that I have never, ever met a parrot, parrotlett, finch, or any other typical exotic birds that I like. I especially hate most conures and cockatoo's. Loud buggers - I've never met one that's a non-screamer.
That said, I've had many wonderful pet ravens. They learn to talk, they don't scream, they are HIGHLY social and tend to bond to a FAMILY. Unlike Macaws or other parrots, who tend to bond to one person, and everyone else is chow or a threat.
I especially like the pied ravens. O.O How beautiful.
Also, as with any animal, socialization is the key. I just find it very hard to interact with an animal so foreign to me as a bird, let alone one that could easily take off my finger in a bad temper. Or worse.
Ravens. Find a good captive breeder, and do a LOT!!!! of research, as you would with any other new pet. But, if I were ever to recommend a bird to anyone, that's the one I'd suggest.

I have an umbrella cockatoo and love her. Buy I agree, one needs to research a lot before owning one.

Re: Exotic birds
Amazon's are very intelligent and great talkers! I just love mine. But I have to say the easiest and sweetest bird in my family and that I have ever been around is a Goffin's Cockatoo(don't breathe a word of this to Lola, my yellow naped amazon!!!She would be irrevocably wounded lol) . Unlike the Umbrella, the Goffin's is much softer spoken and very loving. Doesn't produce the "dust" like umbrella's either. They still require handling and attention but all around fantastic creatures!(Based on my experience and opinion) Green Cheek Conures are small and not loud. They are easy to care for and the small size is very manageable.

Re: Exotic birds
I've always loved macaws and wish I could have one. But either you have to go through a humongous deal of work through an adoption place to get one, or you have to pay an arm and two legs to get one.
I didn't have a choice when it came to rescuing my patagonian conure though... lol and granted she can be noisy, but it's when she's happy and playing with her toys or playing with me. She loves being on my shoulder, she'll let me roll her over on her back and she'll step up onto my hand, she'll whisper to me when i whisper to her, among lots of other things.
But man I definitely want a macaw too.

Re: Exotic birds
I used to have a Sun Conure...he was a sweety. I also had a blue and gold macaw that fell in love with another woman and then never wanted anything to do with me (lol).
I'd say do some research on a Sun Conure. It's a compact parrot, and it's very pretty. But if you dont want a brightly colored bird, I guess that one's not for you.

Re: Exotic birds
I thought it was illegal to keep crows or ravens as pets?
They're supposed to be incredibly intelligent. Search for videos of crows using tools, and solving puzzles to get food...it's amazing.
If I ever owned one I suppose I'd have to go all cliche and name it Eric.
Also, I'm pretty sure that's a raven.
