Story I heard from a customer today...
As I have mentioned a few times, I work at PETCO, and while I was in Small Animals today, I had a customer come in asking me to buy a couple feeder mice. I (like a good RTB member) asked him what kind of snake he was feeding and prepared to give him the "F/T Talk" as I call it. (I give this talk to ALL of my snake customers, current, past or possible future.) His response surprised me a little, "Actually I am not feeding a snake, and not sure if you would believe me if I told you what I WAS feeding..."
Images of random crocodiles, camens and imagined baby mythological dragons flashed through my mind at this point. (The dragons were quite colorful and pretty mind you... ) I told him to basically to try me and that working at a pet store, not much would surprise me...
He started to tell me about a wild Owl that had injured it's wing and (a month ago on Sunday) had walked up to his living room window while he and his daughter were watching television, and screeched at them. This man lives on 5 acres of land, so for it to be so close to the house was surprise enough. They could tell it's wing was injured, and couldn't hunt til it healed, but they didn't want to try to capture it, in case they hurt it worse. They called ALL the animal wildlife refuges around, and they all basically said, "Catch it, and we'll come get it." YOU try to catch a hungry scared full grown owl... Those talons are a ROUGH deal...
This man has been feeding this owl fish that he catches from his pond for 30 days straight. He was telling me how this owl is ready and waiting for his "delivery" between 6:30 and 7:00 pm EVERY night for 30 days. Hasn't missed a night. The reason the man came in to buy the mouse however, his pond was running out of fish... And with an Owl watching over your shoulder, excitedly hooting each time the surface bobber gets pulled under, you know the bird is hungry. He decided to try to show the owl the mouse in the box, let him hear it, then release the mouse onto the cut lawn, and see if the owl will be able to catch it, slowly RETEACHING him to hunt.
He says he might be calling the news station for a story on his friend, and I left him with my e-mail and phone number so he can contact me so I can possibly get some good still shots of the owl.
Thought you might like to hear about this cool story!

Re: Story I heard from a customer today...
i used to love this little turkey vulture, the girl would scarf down the large mice whole LOL, i used to handfeed them to her and she would follow me around the flight waiting for her handouts LOL. the andean condors i worked with would fly right to you to get their rats (if you have ever been near one, you wanna pee your pants when they fly to you, thats a BIIIIG bird!! ) when we started target training the harpy eagle, we would have to skin rats and cut them up into bite-size morsels for treats when she touched the target it was so much fun, im jealous of this guy!! LOL

Awesome story! Can't wait to hear more about it. Owls are amazing creatures. I remember dissecting owl pellets in elementary school. You'd get bonus points if you could reconstruct an entire skeleton!
devine*, I second the request for pics!

Re: Story I heard from a customer today...
Raptors are awesome.
I fed the little American Kestrel I had for a couple days a bird that had slammed into a window while I was at work. I've never seen a little hawk scarf something down that quickly!
We also had a Golden eagle that had been clipped by a car.. fed him some venison we had in our freezer that we thawed out for him. It's amazing how they seem to catch on that you're helping them out.. very intelligent animals, I think.
