Conure Folks
Anyone have much experience with Conures? Specifically Duskys? GF is having problems with the Duskys at her work...they just lost another one today. Regurg problems while handfeeding.

The only experience I have with conures is my Lesser Patagonian...

Re: Conure Folks
Who is handfeeding the birds? Do they know what they're doing? It's very easy to hand feed a baby bird the wrong way, particularly if you try to rush the job...are they regurging during the feeding, and then just keeling over? Or later?

Re: Conure Folks
Not sure, exactly. GF is partially responsible for it, and is certainly the most competant at it. They have had a problem with their baby birds, specifically the Dusky Conures. She was vague when she asked me to look up info so I'm kind of at a loss. I guess she wanted to know if Duskys were known to be tough to handfeed and had a chronic regurge problem. I take it that they don't.

Re: Conure Folks
hmmm honestly, I'd say vet time. I don't know what the issue could be, my knowledge of birds is severely limited.

Re: Conure Folks
I would agree too, but so many of her co workers are so utterly incompetant who knows, could very well be one of their faults.

From what I understand regurgitation happens for two reasons, stress/nervousness, and as a "gift giving" of sorts, some birds will actually regurge or make the motion for owners. You have to remember with birds that food does not go directly to the stomach, it goes to the crop and is then regurged and then eaten.
Is she sure it's regurge? Regurge is usually accompanied with a bobbing up and down of the head, sort of like a cat with a hairball, and whole food items, seeds, chewed up bits of fruits or pellets will fall out mostly dry.
Vomiting is the thing you really have to be concerned with when it comes to birds, this will be a frantic shaking of the head side to side which will sling the more fluid vomit into the head and feathers of the bird. Vomiting is just as involuntary for birds as it is for us. It is impossible to mistake regurge for vomiting and vice versa if you've seen them both.
Past that I can't say much, whether it is stress regurge being made worse by added stress of handfeeding leading to malnutrition, or whether it is vomiting. However if it IS vomiting immediate vet attention is needed.

Re: Conure Folks
I certainly don't know the difference, not sure if she does either.

Re: Conure Folks
Regurgitating while being fed? .. are they using some kind of pump to feed? Small Psittacines can even drown while being fed with a syringe or other pump-type feeder if the operator isn't skillful. We feed small parrots and parrotlets with a spoon, bent into the shape of the lower mandible of an adult. Never had a problem, it does take more time.
.
Good luck with that.
