Weird day.... went to visit the in laws.... they tell me that a parakeet has been coming to their feeders out in the yard all day. Mind you, it's really been cold all week (was 35 when I caught him, now 23 degrees.) I ended up crawling into a bush to catch him. He didn't seem too afraid of people... from the looks of it, he's an adult male (what with the blue cere (sp?) and no littel black lines on his "forehead.) He's kind of thin, I think. He is being housed at their house right now, but at the end of the week their visitors want to take him with them down to NC. What are your all's thoughts on this? What's the best way to transport him? Should they be concerned about any parasites he may have picked up from being outside? Your opinions are needed and appreciated! Thanks for replying! I didn't want to be ignored.... I really have not handled him, since I'm sure he's been through enough (what with being out in the cold and everything, lack of proper nutrition....) But when I grabbed him outside, he did try to bite me a bit. I don't know if he was too feeble to bite hard, but it didn't seem like much. And he gave up on trying to escape pretty quickly. Seemed glad to be inside and warm.
I just talked to the mother in law, she said he hasn't eaten or drank anything yet that she's seen. We covered half his cage w/ a dark cloth, in case he felt insecure.
On transporting him, do you think it would be best to leave him in his cage covered, or put him in a box, or....?

That is odd, I caught one in my yard this spring. Came in the house with it in a snake bag

I've got to wonder if catching parakeets runs in my family.... my first experience with them was when my parents went on a walk and found a blue female on the sidewalk. Or, perhaps it isn't too uncommon to find lost birds.
Late last summer I spotted an African Grey flying through the parking lot by my work. He disappeared into a tree, and I didn't see him again.

Joe's totally right, definitely use a box or a covered cage for transport. And parasites are a concern in wild birds. If he mingled with any he could potentially be carrying parasites, nasty viruses and bacteria like Pseudomonas. A fecal sample and blood panel should be considered.

I watched him for part of the afternoon, and saw that he did feed and fly with some groups of wild birds. I do plan on suggesting to the "new owner" that she take it to the vet just to be sure he's ok, but somehow I think she's not going to go for it (which is too bad.) Maybe if I could give them an idea of how much the vet visit could cost, they would be more likely to go? Any clue how much it would be?
Additionally, I have no clue how long this bird could have been out there. How well do parakeets survive in cold temperatures? At nights here in their yard, the water has been freezing-- even on fish ponds with a pump!)

With all blood work, fecal, and exam it roughly costs about $100. But I was thinking, if they do not want to put money into him now, what makes you think that they will care for him if he becomes sick. Will they then take him to the vet and get him the proper treatment? Sorry, not to sound mean or anything, I just see too many animals not get the proper care.
No, they usually do not make it. That could be the reason why he is so skinny, or could be sick, or just needing some fattening up!

I agree that it's too bad....
before we even caught the parakeet (we had to at least try) the woman said that she would take him home with her. I can't argue with that, because it's no one's bird and she is a family friend. I'm not in the position to take him in, either. It seems like his chances with living with her are better than living outside, at least. I don't want to offend her by telling her that she's being a bad owner if she doesn't take him to the vet. I will admit that I am not quite doing the right thing here, it's just a difficult situation and I'm not sure how to handle it.

Easy way to do this and getr the bird in to be seen is if you either take it to the vet your self OR take it in with the new owner and split the bill with her.
Deffinately keep it away from other birds etc just like you would do a quarentine with a reptile. And good luck!
