need help identifing baby bird
last night i opened up my front door and found a box sitting on the step i opened the box thinking it might be a reptile but it was a baby bird. the bird is black with a red beak, it has long black leg and little claws on each wing like a bat. the bird has to be less then a week old becuase it still has its egg tooth. does anyone know what it can be. i have been feeding it crickets every three hours

A Coot or a Galinule. That's my guess.

Should it have claws on its wings?

Re: need help identifing baby bird
I asked my 2 red tail boas what it was. They said "breakfast."

Re: need help identifing baby bird
Go and get some bird handfeeding formula for now and try and contact a wildlife rehabber.

Re: need help identifing baby bird
Definetely looks like the lil' baby coots I see at the pond.. but I've never seen 'em close up enough to notice if they have little wing-claws. That's really wierd! XD
But yes, try and contact a wildlife rehabber and try to make a little bird-mash for it. I think coots are mostly vegetarian though, eating waterweeds and stuff..

Re: need help identifing baby bird
Looking closer at the pic though, the toes don't look lobed.. *head-tilt* The pic taken from the top looks coot-ish, but the lack of lobing on the toes has now thrown me off.
