Parakeets....

We just recently purchased a pair of parakeets. How long does it take for them to calm down from all the excitment from being in a pet store to being in their new home? I know that they need to have the freedom to roam about every now and then. When we try to take them out they raise a ruckus like they did in the pet store. Eventually we get them out of the cage and they become calm and enjoy their time out. We put their cage onthe floor with the door open so they can find there way back. Their wings are clipped so they can not fly to high which is why we put the cage on the floor.

Hi There!
I just had a couple of questions to help answer your questions (if you haven't yet) do you have the cage on the floor all the time? Also, have you considered a playpen or play perch? Sometimes it can be quite tragic if the birds are on the floor. My birds like to be as high as possible (sometimes too high )

it took me about a month worth of daily/every other day handling to finger train them. hes no longer fussy when i try taking him out. like whitelips said, keep them high, or else they will get fidgity, they like to feel like theyre high up, like in trees and what not.

Keep them high, but not higher than you. Birds tend to get a sense of superiority when higher than the owner.

Good luck!

RE: Parakeets

The cage we have now is a bigger one than we originally purchased.
We havent let them out of their new home yet, just wanted them to get used to it first.
We only let them out when they were in my daughters other room, which is why we put the small cage on the floor. After they went back in the cage went back to it's high shelf.
The new cage has been moved into the den and is roughly on a shelf that is about 5' high off the floor.
They love to sit and watch TV with my daughter, they squwak quite a bit during certain shows. And others they just chatter.
Thanks for all the info. I know that it will take time and patience for them to relax and love their new home and family.
