Problem
My adult female's eye lids have a much bigger opening than normal. She likes to dig and the subtrate packs in her eyes. I tried tiles in the tank but she gets covered in poo and I must bathe her daily. Its easier for me to clean out her eyes but having that in her eyes is not good, and the poo thing is bad too. Does anyone have a thought for my delema?

Switch your substrate to newspaper.

Re: Problem
think about whats best for the animal. i know cleaning poo off her everyday is not fun, but at least she wont be uncomfortable with all the crap in her eyes.

Re: Problem
where they live in australia really isnt even sand. its primarily compacted clay some sand here and there. i use tile as a substrate with mine and for the 3ish years ive been using it, ive had no problems. just make sure you get either slate or ceramic tile if you decide to get it. its also great for dulling their nails just a bit

Re: Problem
Maybe some crumpled newspaper or a low-ceilinged hide box would give her the security she's looking for by burrowing?

Re: Problem
Well here's the thing I have used ceramic tile - poo issue. She does have a proper sized hide. Thanks for everyones help, but I feel its a catch 22. She digs and wants to paw at the glass. Have given her things to climb on but has no interest in them.

Re: Problem
I've used white proso millet for my beardie. It's scoopable, too big to get into the eyes and the best part is it's digestable unlike the sand.

Re: Problem
How big is the enclosure? Does she have a hot enough basking spot? Is she getting enough to eat/the right things to eat?

Re: Problem
Pampers maybe? I use crushed walnut shells and it seems to work well. It clumps nicely and too big to get into the eyes. Also is attractive and easy to clean up. My paws at the glass too but that's cuz he's spoiled rotten. Once he's out and running around he's fine.

Re: Problem
I've actually heard rabbit pellets for a BD... I'm actually going to put mine on it when she gets a little bigger.
Has anyone ever heard anything about rabbit pellets being good/bad?

Re: Problem
i second the newspaper. i use it and seems to work fine for our guys. plus it's cheap. the sunday paper is like 4 novels long and costs about 2-3 bucks. lasts a long time.

Re: Problem
Walnut shells is what was gettingin her eyes. Switched to a clay and sand mix made by zoomed, add water and pack it down. Works very well better than slate/tile and all other loose substrates by a mile. Only down side she has a dirt smell, no suprise. She has not had any thing packed in her eyes yet.
