this probably isn't the forum the ask this due to bias but do you guys think beardies or boas make better pets? this is my critieria (w/e)-- 1) you can hold them and they are docile (there goes that word again...... might as well say, "I am very jovial today" ) 2) you dont really have to worry about them running off. Like if i was holding it, then had to take a dump, I could just put it down and when I came back it would just be there (not neccssary just something cool) 3) can see them doin' stuff in their tanks like climbing and stuff 4) size (mainly answer this to beardies) will a beardie get like a foot and a half long or just a foot? 5) personnalities. Will they be unique? will they like me? will they act human like sorta???
im feeling this on my decison / / /

From what we have read william, I would go with a beardy if I were you. Kool critters. They will be a lot more active in their cages than boas will. I do not have the answer to the other questions as I don't own any beardies.

my beardie is 4 months old and over a foot..
they average somewhere between 1 1/2 foot to 2 foot.. they would still require a smaller cage then a boa.. 55 gallon would suit a adult.. u have to relise tho they will need vegies cut up for them every day and be fed crickets/mealies that are dusted once a day and other ranges for ages.. anyway they could probbly suit you better then a boa.
just PLEASE tell us u will be able to keep it its hole life... i have a website on bearded dragons infact with caresheets forums on them and a bunch of other cool stuff..
go to www.Beardeds.8m.com
Can u promise us u wont get rid of it?

IMHO you are looking for a bearded dragon. Boaguy is right.. You can't really put it down and "do your business" and expect them to be there when you come back. I dont even think a dog does that.
What I do know.. Is that they are very active, they love to watch you and your activities. I have females that can range around 18 inches and adult males upwards of 22 inches. Just depending on if your wanting a normal or a colored/morph phase..
Also, Boaguy mentioned mealies and crickets, you have to be careful with bearded dragons. There is a feeding rule with them just like with the boas. Only with beardies, its nothing bigger than the space between there eyes. So when you feed crickets, judge the space between there eye's and thats the size you want. Green's and Veggie's EVERYDAY.. Reptisun 5.0 UVB light, as well as a spot light to get the cage upwards of mid 90's plus/minus.
(Keep in mind, when the dragons get bigger, and you feed larger crickets.. they 'CHIRP' ... CAN DRIVE A PERSON MAD I TELL YA!! )
Also, when beardies are small.. its a good idea to mist them once or twice a day. Little guys prefer to take there water that way, rather than a water bowl.
Good luck and keep up informed as to what you choose..

I've been there.. done that..
Yes.. I've had my words with Petco a few times.. and there "so called" reptile people who like to give "suggestions and advice".. I like to ask them.. And how many reptiles DO YOU OWN??
For the most part.. that usually shuts them up, cause the answer is normally either none.. or 1-3.. Yeah.. When your rounding 20 or 30.. Then you can give me advice.
Or if you've been in it for a few years then I might give you the time of day.

I'm sure all of you will be happy to know that I have decided on buying the beardie. I went to the pet store today (looked legit enough) and they had about six 2-week-old beardies. I know I know..... dont buy it till it's a month old but i cant wait so im goin next week end to pick up "Boris".
The reason I decided on the beardies is so cool I could scream. It isn't on the typical colors or looks (actually they are UGLY things) but the way they act. When I had an adult beardie on my shirt and was asking questions about them it would tilt its head like a dog. But it only did it when I said something. Almost like he wished he knew what i was saying.
Can yall give me tons of info? I need to stock up on it even though I think I already know enough for it to survive, but not to strive and to live happiley and like me. I already have a spot light and an undertank heater. I think I'm going to get A long spot light.. Any thought? I am also going to get a clay hide, basking log, food bowl (water bowl is covered), and repti sand. But I already own a 20 gallon tank which is good enough for an adult (so says Bill Love of Reptiles magazine). Thanks

For one DON'T USE SAND also they need a variety of insects and vegies no spiders they have venome I'm not sure If they're deadly for beardies but just be safe. no eggplant either. they will be carnivorius when younge and herbavorius when older.I am giving you this info but please find in you to not get a reptile.get a rat or gerble or feret they are easyer to care for. even a dog.

Hey, glad to here it. i saw on another post u will be keeping it until death also ,
so thats a good thing.
Yup Kongoz is right. for baby BD's sand isnt good.. wouldent want your little fellow to get impacted. But kongoz isnt right on one thing. they are omnivours there hole life.
just as babys they need more protien and less vegies as adults they eat more vegies then protien. just dont feed anything u catch only crickets and that stuff from petstores/supplyers
anywa.. never feed insects/vegies the size of imbetween there eys
he will also need a UVB light .. and u will need to get some calcium powder to dust crickets with.
u can find BD caresheets on my website www.reptilianconcepts.8m.com
and i recommend u buy the BD manual u can get it on www.amazon.com for around $8
not bad and it teaches u everything! i learned everything i know about BD from it!
the book also gives u other references and u can also find a caresheet on BD's right here on redtailboa.net just click the caresheets on the toolbar to your left
hope this helps
later
