The lady I got him from said the bulb is about 5 months old and will need to be changed next month. I was also given a regular heat lamp too that sits on the cage but the bulb they had in it is blown. Should I put a bulb in it to create a hot side. If so what kind? The said the tank is a 40 gallon but I have a 40 gallon and it is alot bigger than mine.
This is what the set up looks like right now.

Re: Sara. My new beardie

ditch the sand, get a non particle substrate. a hot side is needed. they require a basking spot of about 103-117. a flood light will do just fine. ive used a 60w in my 4x2x2 and that got the basking temps. perfect. so a 45w should do the job for that enclosure. they also need a cool side, no warmer than high 80s. use a digital thermometer or temp gun to measure temps, not the gauge.

Okay I have a bulb I can use right here, I will put that in now I will put it above the drift wood she has been hanging out on to bask. Right now the temp is 86 deg. So that will be okay for the cool side. I will fix the hot side now. And new substrate and get some superworms.

Re: Sara. My new beardie

Spike, Thankyou so much for the info. I want him or her to be healthy and happy. The people I got her from said it had been about a year since she has had any attention ( being held ect..). They said I might have to be patient with her that she needs to be retamed. I havent had a problem with her at all she has been sitting on my shoulder hanging out and the same thing last night.

Re: Sara. My new beardie

WAIT Dont call him spike lol,

Gary is kind of the beardie guy around here, but in a short paragraph.

Substrate, use slate, its cheap, easy to clean and cant harm your beardie. Use gutloaded crickets and superworms, for now and try mealies for a treat later on. Eventually she'll need atleast a 4'x2'x2' cage, basking spot of 100-115, Here are some favorite foods of my beardie joker, mustard greens, carrots, apples, and some dead crickets sprikled on, and for a treat sometimes I sprinkle freezedried bloodworms on top. If you want to, I'm sure your little gal would love it, put a tray of aspen snake bedding in there with a half log over it, mine likes to burrow his head in the aspen and sleep. Beardies have a tendency to hit the floor right when you turn their lights out. One last thing, change the UVB bulb just to be safe, if you dont know how old it is.
