ok here we go :-)
I've been consitering getting a bearded dragon over the last few weeks - i've done alot of research and saved up $$. i just want to make sure i have everything right and i would love some info from ya'll on them too like personal experiance and pics and stuff .... i'm one of those people that will not buy an animal without throughly thinking it through and making sure i can provide for the animal b4 i get it so here i go.
CAGING:
for juvi you can use a 20 gallon long with hides and branches to climb on - for an adult a minimum of 40gal breeder. no closed in tops b/c humidity isn't good for them ... paper towels for babies and newspaper or calcium sand for adults (i've heard mixed reviews on the calcium sand any input??)
Lighting
they need a full spectrum UVA and UVB light b/c w/o it they cannot asorbe calbium and thereform their bones deteriorate. the cool side temps ahould be in the lower 80* and the warm side in the mid 90* with a basking spot of 100*- 110* ahve a log that is as wide as their body that they can sit on to bask.
feeding
Babys are mainly carnivores, eating mostly crickets (they shouldn't be any bigger than the space between their eyes) ... silk worms and cockroached are good too as well as fresh greens like mustard greens for water you can mist them and their greens as well as having a water bowl - adults tend to eat more greens than protien ...
sound good? am i missing anything? i also know that you need to dust the crickets with calcium powder - but that confuses me alittle on how to do that and how often... if y'all have links to any good care sheets please let me know them - i'm not in any hurry to get one. i like doing research so i know what i'm talking about and i know that i can provide for the animal i'm taking into my care
thanx in advance,
Leigh

thanx i try and do that with every animal i get .... power yourself with knowledge - i've found that that is the best way to convince my father that i am ready for something. he askes me soooo many questions and when i can answer them all - he'll generally say i can get w/e it is i'm asking for, i like it cuz it helps me know what i'm gettin into .... so i research and it always turns out better in the long run
what calcium dust do you recomend - i've also heard to give them multi-vitamins?

calcium every day, multivitamin once a week...repcal
babies eat 2-3 times a day. i do greens in the morning to munch on all day, then when I get home I give him crickets to chase. he loves both.
if i dont offer greens in the morning he eats his newspaper.
I dont suggest sand of any type.
babies can bask at about 105, adults at about 95, although a cool side is necessary just like snakes.
the more greens you feed a baby the more likely it will be happy with greens as an adult. but dont short the baby on crickets.
uv light should be 6-8 inches away from the beardie, and replaced every 6 months. mercury vapor bulbs or flourescent uvb bulbs can be used. I use the reptisun 5.0 i think.
bathing is important, they wont drink water from a still bowl. they normally drink, bathe, and poop during bathtime.
crickets are expensive, I buy 1000 every 2-3 weeks to keep my prices low. they are delivered to my door for 22 bucks....kinda high...but I am satisfied.
look into http://www.reptilefood.com and other cricket ranches. the LFS sells crickets for 12 for a dollar, 100 for 8 bucks. so you can see the savings.
wonderful lizards/pets/companions. good luck.
Rick
