BD's new tank
Ok, Spike(BD) finally pooped today. (Thank God)
I decided to upgrade his housing from a ten gallon to a fifty gallon reptile tank. It's shorter and wider than the traditional fifty-five gallon fish tank. I still have my little 5 1/2 spot light above the tank. Do I need additional lights or should I upgrade to a larger spot light. It looks very small above the 50 gallon tank. I still have the UVB bulb above the tank. I also bought a large log type ornament for basking. Should the water bowl be large enough for the lizard to soak in. I have one large enough for him to drink and not soak.
The temp in the tank should be 100-110 under the basking lamp right and not everywhere. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Troy

hi there
ideal temps are 100-110 under basking area, ambient air temps: warm end around 88-95 and cool end about 70, uvb shoud ideally be placed within 6" of beardies to gain maxium benefit and be 0.5 or 0.8 bulbs, idont have a large water bowl just a small shallow one for drinking as they go in a bath once a week, and large water bowls can raise the humidity up too much for a desert dwelling lizard, hope this helps

I'd say temps between 100-115. You dont NEED a water bowel, thats optional. Some dragons will drink from standing water and some wont. But they should get a bath 1-3 times a week. And be misted as well. Your UVB should run the length of the enclosure. They thrive in the light so try to give as much as possible!

Tubes
I have tubes over the tank. I have the tube placed diagonal over the basking area. How long will a tube last. I know there are better bulbs out there. What are you guys using and what type of costs am I looking at. Do they plug in into an outlet or do they have to hooked up to a seperate ballast. I setup a reef tank that needed seperate ballasts in order to get the special bulb to work. I will upgrade the length of the bulb and unit once the bulb expires if I don't purchase something else later.

Try to upgrade entirely to MVBs. With present research (just from what I have done on my own) I can no longer promote the use of tube lighting for anything except 10 gallon tanks and/or ambient lighting.
Soaking pans are a great addtion to a juvenile/adult beardies setup. This gives the animal a choice at when it wants to bathe or soak....I highly recommend them. I also feel that if you provide one from the onset the animal will always utilize one, eliminating the need for bathing altogether.
For a 50 gallon I would recommend a mac industry 100 watt bulb with a basking point set for about 10 inches from the top....on the other side you can provide a night hot spot as well with a CHE or projector to provide some nighttime heat....taking the time of year into consideration you can use a thermostat---which is a very inexpensive, yet handy tool for the warmer months.
Congrats on the poop btw
Told ya it was all good.

Where to I buy the bulbs
Where do you purchase the mac 100 bulb from. I am assuming that is a mvb light. Does that provide heat and sun rays as well or do you need two setups as well.

I use the Powersun MVBs and yes, they give off UVB and heat. I get them from www.reptiledirect.com and they cost around $33, which is a really good price. The T-Rex Active UVs are also good alittle more expensive though but not by much. If you have these, they are usually not enough light because its only on one side of the cage, thats why I recommend a fixture running the length of the enclosure as well. You can get fixtures at your local hardware store for MUCH cheaper then petstores or anything else. Then you will have to get the bulb from an expo or off line or what not.
Good luck!
