Hi I am looking into getting a beardie as a family pet. are they nice pets? aggresive at all? anyone can tell me about german giants? i would love to see a pic of a giant. It was suggested that for kids that a baby might be too skittish and I should get a juvinile?? Is this right? Also What do they eat? THANX

I reccomend getting a beardie that is at least 12 inchs. At this age they have realized how big and bad they are and aren't scared of anything (except for maybe a family cat!).Juvilelles diet should be around 50% incectivous 30% leafy greens and 10% fruits and 10% whole grain. Some of the classic insects for beardies are crickets, mealworms, waxworms, superworms (zamophdos), and nightcrawlers or redworms for the adults. Some good plants to feed them are collared greens, broccili, carrots, cactus, clover, dandelion, millet, mustard greens, okra, parsley, turnip, kale, green beans, beet greens, and spinach greens. Pretty much any fruits just watch out for large seeds and they particually like berries.
Beardies are awesome once they reach that 12 inch mark where they calm down. Just hold him alot and he will reconize you for food and really do some amazing things!! Beardies rock. Never thought I'd say that. LOL we feed ours a combination of comercially available food and greens. We have a young german giant cross. Basically here's the deal with the germans as I know it. Feel free to correct me. Some time back some beardeds were imported from a german breeder. the bloodline had some interesting characteristics namely their large size and ability to fight off disease. When other dragons were getting sick and dying they apeared to be fine. German giant females tend to lay larger clutches of eggs than other bloodlines. They tend to be darker in coloration but can be bred with any color phase. I will try to get joe to post the pix of our little german female also the vandiveers have an awesome site dedicated to beardeds I will try to find the addy for you. Hope this helps some

I've had my beardie for about 4-6 months now, cool little guy. I usually take him out every day at lunch when I go home. He is pretty docile and will just sit there, then he'll go explore for awhile. He is still a Juvy and is about 13" with a stubby tail(probably another 1" . He isn't scared of the cats, because I had to smack em once(cats). Curious little feller to, they will run up to something and taste it with their tongue.

Just a little FYI for ya if ya get a Beardie, Never feed Beardie's FireFly's!!!! They have a chemical in them that act's as a stimulant in them that cause's their heart to practially explode!!! It speed's it up kind of like Adrenaline too fast for it to handle it and POP!!!

Here's my BEARDIE feeding page. The ratios on feeding them, vegetation vs live foods, are a lil different for young vs older ones also. BEARDIE FEEDING
