Wha'ts the average lifespan for a beardie? I've heard that they are quite short lived. I've heard people say that even if they are kept under good captive condition, they only live 5 to 8 years. Is that true? 5 years sounds really short. I know that they grow really fast and can attain their full size in just one year. That's one indication that they might be short lived as well.(this doesn't apply to leos, though) I got really attached to my pets, and I can't stand lossing them so quickly. I don't really care of how fast they breed, the individual can't be replaced. That's why I keep long lived pets like leopard geckos and boas. Talking about that, I just lost my be loved cat, blackie...

Average is probably 5 to 8 - but keep in mind, that most likely does factor in people that may not be caring for them ideally. With the improvement of people's knowledge on them, and the improvement in diet that is being fed to them, they are living longer. I think the oldest beardie I can think of off hand is just over 10 years. I've read some books that give their lifespan as up to 15 years - while others say only 10 max.

If you like long lived pets you might want to look into uromastyx. It takes about 3 years for them to reach full size and they can live up to 50 years. Thier personalities are great and thier care is very close to beardies.

Not trying to knock what ya said.. BUT I have as yet to come across much information on the uro's , plus they have only started in the last decade to be kept here in the states as pets.. Therefore I was wondering where you get the info from on their l;ife span being 50 years ???

I think the oldest confirmed beardie age is about 10 years and 1 month old. There have been more (unconfirmed) reports of beardies living up to 11 or 12 years, and some people attribute that to the trend toward drastically reducing the protein intake of adult beardies. Too much fat and protein can shorten their lifespan in the same way it can ours.
Highest longevity I've seen for a Uro is 15 yrs for an egyptian. The longevity records page I usually look at is
here. I'd think it makes sense that uromastyx can beat that record, as husbandry knowlege improves, especially as more is learned about proper diet and the role brumation plays. There just isn't a whole lot known about uros right now, unfortunately, and few field studies.
I used to have a link to an Israeli field study bookmarked, but can't find it now. Did find this page, though, and I think it's the same researcher:

I've heard also that with Beardies there is also allot of inbreading and some deseases that are common. Some forms of cancer too. I'm not sure what is due to the inbreading/general genetics/or proper care.

The oldest age that I can confirm for a bearded is 12 years 3 months and counting. This is for a male that has been in my personal collection since he was six weeks old.
