Re: should he live
OK, breething in, breething out, as you all know i have a bad temper rep, im going to try to be postivive here.
"this littttle dude has been in with my emerald male for 3 days" I dont know what to say but OMG! in the most postive way that is a very very very bad thing to do,(said it without cussing yeah) it poses such a huge detramental risk to your snake its not even funny, 3 days with a live rodant, your snake may not be hungry but i can assure you the rodent is. I dont belive i need to link pictures of dead snakes and injured ones of people doing exactly what you are talking about just having done. Then to top it off you take pictures of the "rat" walking around on your snake, how were you intending to stop it when it decided to start knawing on it, and or if not killing it.
I hope that this isnt a regular occurance, if you must feed live IMO be there to watch it all times until it is dead, NEVER leave a live prey with your snake or your snake will go from predator to prey. Im really really really concerned with this post, well above all else your snake looks gorgeous.
please dont take this in a negative way at all
but you are so lucky, you still have a snake that is alive.

As an alternative to feeding a live, fully functional rat you could stun the rat and then offer it to the snake. Feeding stunned rats isn't as safe as feeding F/T, but is far more safe than feeding fully functional rats.

Re: should he live
I can't overly bash you for the feeding live thing because I have two WC Saharan Sand Boas who I got in Feb who refused to eat until I offered live last month. Both were at a place where they were loosing weight and skin was coming loose so I made the choice togive it a try. They eat live mice. Now, the problem I have is the three day thing. All that rat would have to do is reach down and nail the snake, even just being curious, and you got problems. Mine haven't taken more than a hour to go after their prey (albeit the first time I tried it with the female, when I checked on them, the mouse was actually huddled up with the snake and they were both sleeping together) How long does it usually take for the EBT to eat when it does? I wouldn't leave it alone with prey for more than a couple of hours.

Re: should he live
Everyone else has already shared our concerns about the whole 3 days, live rat in cage with snake. I don't need to say anything about that. I'll just say beautiful Emerald, and good luck getting him onto F/T rats.

Re: should he live
Don't most emeralds only eat live? Maybe I'm mistaken, I don't have one so I haven't had to deal with it. I have the Saharan thing though. My Saharan started on F/T, then he stopped eating for ten months. He finally ate a live mouse (after trying EVERYTHING else). He gets live now. | |
