Re: emerald loving
Removable perches go a long way to reducing bites when you need to take them out.

Re: emerald loving
You could have saved yourself the trouble with the tooth as it would eventually be shed. This happens quite often with our emeralds, a few days later the tooth has fallen to the cage bottom. Often they will lose them into the prey item and I will find them in the stool.
The only reasons I can see to hold them behind the head are:
For examination at the vets or if I suspect a problem.
To admin oral meds, for tubing them and for injections.
A speculum is used to hold the mouth open (when needed).
I really don't know how to describe my technique for getting a hold of them behind the head. I always have someone to help hold them from wrapping once I secure them behind the head. I take them out on the perch (at home or at the vets), then I wait until they start moving around to expose the back of the head. Then there is a moment that I "feel" is the opportune time, a quick but gentle grab and it's over. Of course your aim has to be right, LOL. I always hold them at the vets because I don't trust the techs, not knowing their experience level. No bites to date.

Re: emerald loving
Other than neos, the bites I have taken were situations that I didn't think before acting. Call it complacency, but stupidity would be a better word. None of which had anything to do with trying to secure them. You know the rule, never put a body part in an emeralds cage after lights out? Sometimes we think our cleverness makes us faster than an emeralds strike, WRONG! You haven't lived until you get a hit in a thumb joint! LOL
