I have heard from a few people that the carpet pythons in general, but especially the Irian Jaya Carpet Pythons are more difficult to get settled in to a new environment and eating than other snakes.
Has anyone found this to be true?

Another reply to my own post.....
My Irian Jaya ate tonight..... tonight will make something like ten or eleven days with me.
He ate an adult mouse only because that is what he was fed prior to me pruchasing it.... next week or the week after it is on to rat pups!

Hey Stormy glad to hear your little one ate!!! The thing with the rat pup might be harder than you expect if he's never had rat's before!! Some Carpet Python's never take rat's!! From what I've heard most are like this with the exception of a few!

After an initial external health check I would leave the animal
undisturbed for one week .Then offer a feed (seperate tote),
leave undisturbed for a further 4-5 days before easing it into
handling , maybe 1/2 hr 1-2 times per week, in a month he /she
should be comfortable w/ regular handling.

Ben...
That's pretty much what I did with it.... one week of minimal handling then was put in a feed tote as all are my snakes and it was given the mouse and took it with no problems. It has never struck or even acted like it was going to. The Irayan Jaya Carpet is by far the nicest snake I have for handling.
I had asked about the settling to more or less educate myself on the snakes.... the person that I bought the Irian from had told me not to be surprised if it took 3 or 4 weeks before it started eating. I was curious if anyone else had that kind of experience with carpets.
One thing I have noticed with the Irian Jaya is it spends a LOT more time out in the open.... it hangs on the side of the water dishes in it's enclosure. It goes back and forth between the one one the warm side and the cool side, not being in the water, just curled on the lip of the bowl. It also spends a lot of time on the cork bark climbs that I have provided for it.

hey,
my two carpets are voracious eaters. they have both readily taken to just about anything i throw in for them. for a while they were eating one rat pup every week to ten days and now they've moved to one mouse every 10 to 14 days.
i've also noticed that they do like to spend a lot of time out in the open. i've given both of them one hide box on the ground and an elivated box. they spend about an equal time on their branches and the elivated box. they almost never, with the exception of just eating, spend time on the ground.

My Irian Jaya won't touch rats....she runs and hides when I try to feed them to her. I scented one with a mouse once and she took it...but other than that, she holds out strictly for mice. She has never been any trouble though. She has always been calm and sweet. I never felt a ned for a "settling in" period.

Hmmm... Drax dragged this post up from the dead, but since it is up I will update
My Irian Jaya Carpet is doing great It has become one of my son's favorite snakes, he loves to carry it around the house draped over his shoulder.
It will eat whatever is offered to it in it's feeding tub. As a matter of fact two weeks ago it ate a weanling rat and chased it with an adult mouse!
