Here is another post to get this forum going.....
Does anyone else have a Irian Jaya Carpet Python (Morelia spilota variegata)
Our Irian , the newest edition to our collection, is very sweet and seems to have a lot more personality and intelligence than the other snakes.
For those out there with Morelias is this true for them also.

I don't have an Irian Jaya, but I think I told you I have a Jungle Carpet. She's definitely intelligent and has personality, although sweetness isn't part of it.

Hey Stormy like I said I've got a Jungle Carpet Python and he's killer! Not a mean streak in his body! But he know's where he want's to go when out of his tank and he's going there no if's, and's, or but's?? He does seem very smart and intelligent but not to the extent as my Burmese, but then again maybe he's bluffing??? He's very restlesswhen out of the tank and alway's on the go it's hard to get a good pic of him he move's so much!!! The only complaint I have with him is he won't take rat's only mice so when he get's full size watch out RodentPro send me some JUMBO mice!!!

Lisa (Reticu-Lady) has an Irian Jaya....she can't get online too much right now tho. I do miss her. Does anyone know where her snakes went during her move? Is anyone else here keeping in some kind of touch with her?

I was wondering about Reticu-lady just yesterday too,
Would like to hear if she's doin alright?
M.S.Variegata is also found in central northern Australia.
We refer to it as the Top End carpet.
The only one I've known of was a bit of a biter but I don't think that goes
for all of them.

This one I got is about 36" long and does not seem to have an aggressive bone in it's body!
I almost purchased a jungle carpet instead of the Irian Jaya but finally decided on the Irian because it was more confident than the jungle was and was also better around the children that were in the pet store that night.

I don't think I'd call my coastals "sweet" or any other carpets I've seen up close and personal, but they're definitely not mean or aggressive. I totally agree Shad, they always know exactly where they are going all the time . I've never handled a variegata, is the general consensus that they are more "lax" than JCP/CCP? Who else keeps them here? Anybody? -Juggalo

I have an Irian and would like to say he is a real sweetheart. I bought him out in Long Island while he was a hatchling for $100. That was about almost a year ago. Now the place is selling all his siblings for $200! Should've got a pair when I had the chance. Is it ok to breed related pairs to each other? I've got to do some research on that part. As for temperament, my Irian is calm and collective. Thing is he never wants to leave his branches! I gave him a hidebox and he has never used it once. Maybe to poo all over it. Well, congratulations with your new addition and I hope your Irian gives you as much joy as mine gives me. Oh! Almost forgot....here is a pic of DJ.....

Goodluck!

Nice snake and pic, Ophi <TABLE BORDER=0 ALIGN=CENTER WIDTH=85%><TR><TD><font class="pn-sub">Quote:</font><HR></TD></TR><TR><TD><FONT class="pn-sub"><BLOCKQUOTE> Is it ok to breed related pairs to each other? </BLOCKQUOTE></FONT></TD></TR><TR><TD><HR></TD></TR></TABLE> Do you know if the parebt of the siblings are related? If they are unrelated it if fine for a first generation siblings to mate IMO. However I would not sell/trade/give anyone 1.1 out of that clutch for future mating. Excessive inbreeding does weaken the genetic structure (ever seen Deliverence!!). For example if you take your siblings and mate them, then mate 1.1 out of that clutch, then 1.1 out of thier clutch and on and on.... you will eventull have a VERY genetically weak clutch that will be missing eyes and have chronic health problems because of a weakend immune system. However if the parents are unrelated IMO it if just fine to mate 1.1 out of the clutch as long as you don't give up any more siblings out of their clutch for mating. -Juggalo

Ophi..(lmao).....That is an extremely nice looking Irian you have there...WOW!
his colors are just beautiful...(I just had to let you know ..)
I would agree in saying that carpets are a bit on the more intelligent side, but on the other hand, have owned and been around a couple mental jcps..lol..(inbreeding perhaps?..hehe)
Maybe we assume our larger and/or more alert snakes are smarter than say,our boas because of those exact characteristics....With retics and burms...size has something to do with it..they are almost like humans at times...and as for carpets and scrubs, for example..my opinion is that its the big alert eyes always watching you like a hawk ....you can almost 'see' their brains churning,ya know? ..
There are definitely breeds that are smarter than others, but I think that our snakes' intelligence is based a lot on its 'family' background, genes and maybe even what it goes through in the egg or womb...((??))..I dunno..this is just a speculation on my part....maybe I'm completely off base here, but it seems somewhat logical...

I love my lil Irian Jaya girl...she's dreamy. She has never givin me any trouble. She seems to actually enjoy being held and she isn't shy or afraid of anything. The one time she got out was when I was feeding....took a break and was sitting at my computer desk in the snake room. I felt something slither across my feet....looked down and there she was. I had left her door closed but unlatched because I was going to feed her another one when she had time to swallow....but she decided to take a little stroll instead.
