If you leave the crickets in there, they will eat part of your snake. Greensnakes don't need much heat. Room temps is fine. Make sure there are plenty of vines and branches to climb on and once every 4-5 days, offer a cricket or 2 and tiny feeder fish in a shallow bowl of water till it grows to over a foot and then once a week is plenty. Do not feed gold fish. Goldfish are toxic. What you need is small guppies or shiner minnows small enough that your snake can swallow them. You also have one of the only snake species that requires UVB lighting. The UVB is not optional. He/she will die without it.

Goldfish are toxic? how bad is it, and what are the effects? Had a garter snake I caught in the summer when I was like 5 and we kept it for the winter and released it the following spring. But we fed it goldies the whole time every week and lived a long full life with us.

If you got it from petco, then no. If it is a snake which it is. NO!!! Snakes are entirely carniverus(However you spelll that) I would say crickets, guppies, and maybe nightcrawlers.

I also used to feed my garter feeder fish (not sure if they were technically goldfish), but he seemed fine. Of course he needed a balanced diet so I also offered several types of worm to give him all of the vitamins he needed. He did great in my care and we eventually released him (as he was wild anyway) to make room for the new boa. He fed off that for about a year and a half and never had health problems.

Goldfish arent toxic...Poor choice of words, they are generally full of parasites and disease..A wildcaught garter more then likely already had parasites so whats a few more from goldfish....On the other side of the coin I recently read a forum that was arguing that most fish parasites are host specific and cant be transfered over to other species....So who really knows...
