Question GTP Questions

Now that i have a bit more experience under my belt i am giving more serious thought to getting a GTP. They are just such gorgeous snakes! Initially i had set out to get one and was in the process of ordering one through a friends uncle, however i had to hesitate after i asked about whether they were CB and he pompously informed me (he has a lot of herp experience; mostly with venomous herps ;he has two cobras, two leucistic rat snakes, a snow corn, and a beardie) that there was no such thing as a CB GTP and that what people referred to as CB were just gravid females that were WC and had the babies hatched in captivity. I knew this wasn't true (am i right?) so i decided not to get one through HIS breeder and started shopping around. I found a nice little reptile shop with VERY well cared for herps, and while there to talk to the owner about his breeder i saw the prettiest little jungle x diamond carpet python for $85...i asked to see him and the guy got him out on the stick he was perched on....he immiediatly started snapping at everything in sight and i fell in love lol. Anyway now that i have had Stryker for a while the GTP bug is nibbling away at me again, but i have a few questions. First off, i will be building a cage for it, it's about 5 feet high by four feet wide by two feet deep, is that a big enough cage? And where can i find a non toxic way to water proof it? I went to lowes but all the stuff they have for water proofing decks and such seems like it would leach chemicals, so what can i use? And what price range am i looking at, i'm not loaded with money but i am willing to spend as much as i need to to get a healthy, CB animal. I have found them for as low as $280 but i hear that if they are that cheap it usually isnt a very healthy animal or else wild caught. Anyone know of any reputible breeeders that won't charge out the ear? Also, i have seem those little foggers that you can put in the water bowl and they send up a sort of dry ice-looking mist, would this be good for keeping humidity up, or would just misting be better? Also, how can i properly heat a tall cage like that? Obviously there will be a basking spot light at the top, but how can i get heat to the bottom without overheating the cage? Thanks in advance for any help!

ummm yeah that comment about no GTPs being bred in captivity is false. There are plenty being bred. Prices vary and with babies you are going to have very few clues as to what they will look like as adults so prices on babies usually reflect the quality of the parents.

That cage is a bit on the huge side. ESPECIALLY if you are getting a baby. It will take a couple of years before it needs anything bigger than like a 29 gallon tank. Hatchlings can be kept in something as small as a 5 1/2 gallon tank for awhile. They are about the size of a nightcrawler.

There really is no need to heat the bottom of the cage. They don't go there much. Be careful with how you heat from overhead so as not to dry them out though. Maybe a radiant heat panel would work better than a light bulb in a cage that size.

I've always been afraid to use a waterbowl fogger because I'm afraid it will spook the snake away from using the waterbowl. I have no data on this...just a fear I have so I have never used one. I do however use humidifyers and rig up vinyl tubing that carries the fog into my arboreal cages. You still have to mist the snake though because they get a good bit of their daily intake of water from licking droplets off themselves.

Your friends uncle is very wrong don't listen to him. Alot of people do sell babies as CB that are actually captive hatched he might of confused what he was saying. If you buy one sub-adults/adults that are captive born are the easiest to start with. You will know which color it will stay, the tempermate and the sex of it. You can not sex baby Chondros without kinking their spine don't let anyone tell you they know what they are doing. The only thing they know is your gonna end up with a crooked back Chondro. The cage your trying to use is wayyyyy to big you will never have proper temps or humidity. If you read about Chondro's alot you probably have heard the name Trooper Walsh. I am lucky enough to live about 15 miles from him and I was able to meet him a few years ago through a mutual friend. I was supprised to see he kept all of his adult Chondro's even 6 footers in non see through Rubbermaids that were only about 72quarts with heat bulbs on them and he use's cages that are 48longx24x24 for breeding. Now he has been breeding these since the 70's so I think he knows how to keep them. Your best bet is to buy Greg Maxwells book The Complete Chondro from www.finegtps.com set up the cage as he tells you and test everything fix any problems that happen way before you buy the snake. Then once everthing has been running for a month or so and you know everything is perfect find a breeder that is known to have nice animals and that is willing to help you out later down the road. As far as prices are captive born sub-adults and adults are anywhere from $400-$25,000 and up. Here's a little myth breaker for friends uncle. One of my pairs from the year before last. Enjoy!!!!!!
350 gram male working a 1500 gram female.

Picture is on day 47 only 4 days left until they hatched this is why they are denting in.

Look at the pretty baby

Good luck, Tim Rash
