My Caninus with estomatitis (infection)
Hi everybody!
Firt of all, apologize for my english who is not very good, but I hope, clear.
This is my caninus female with a estomatitis or mouth infeccion.
The snake was purchased ill, ..... it is a very long history!
Actually she is on treatment for first one week. As my veterinary told me, I put 2 inyections per 2 days (C VITAMIN AND ANTIBIOTIS). And another one only if present pain(analgesic)
I would like to know experiences with infecctions on emeralds, I know this kind of infecctions are worse in this species than other, thats the reason I ask for experiences, OPINIONS, any extra information to specially kept in mind, etc etc
Thank you in advance for your help/efforts everybody.
KIND REGARDS

mouthrot/stomititis is a bacterial infection. Antibiotic shots do work but if you want it to go away fast, swab it with an antiseptic. 50/50 listerine and water, hydrogen peroxide and even even iodine works but I think the best and least irritating is nolvasan.
I keep a lot of corallus and have dealt with mouthrot in an amazon or two but never an emerald. I don't see where it would be any different though. I guess I'm just lucky. None of my emeralds have ever had mouth problems. Good Luck.

I don't see why it would be treated any differently than with other species of snake. Medically that is. I have always used hydrogen peroxide for any mouth rot. One of the biggest mistakes made in treating mouth rot though is not gettin the cheezey material out from around the teeth. Getting in there with a tooth pick or maybe one of those new rubber tipped tooth picks that they have now and getting all the material out of the sores will really help. But a twice a day flush with hydrogen peroxide is a must and will speed the recovery by leaps and bounds.

I keep hearing ...or reading actaually that peroxide and listerine cause living cells to die and some tissue damage...but, I have personally never seen any such thing. Sure, some living cells probably die but they die anyway and are constantly replaced. Tissue damage? After any "mouthrot" treatment, I've never seen anything but perfectly healed mouth, unless of course the snake happened to have died during treatment from his/her other illnesses. I have gargled with peroxide before...poured it my ears (That's fun! It sounds like you have bumble bees living in your head...try it!) It doesn't burn or kill any tissue. If it does, it sure heals fast and leaves no traces. Listerine burns. I'll give them that but again...tissue damage? I've never seen it.

Well , thank you very much for your answers!
Actually, I think she begins to feel better, because the infection and the inflamation goes down.
I am sure as I can see, but lately, the snake stand in her perche with the head hidden in to the body, and I suppose this reactions are because the infection still cause damage.Anyway, do not present any pain(at the beginning present pain in the firt half of the snake)
At the same time, I will aplicate topic mouth treatment, because I will purchase the drug at the veterinarian.I will inform about the name.
I thougth will diferent in emeralds to another snakes for the hunsbandry rules.
One question:In wich country it is based this forum????
Thank you very much

There are several folk's caresheets at corallus.com under the literature section. The forums are based in the US.

All of my emeralds will tuck their heads into their body to avoid the light on occasion. It has nothing to do with infection...It's just part of their vampiric lifestyle. They hate bright light when they are trying to sleep.

Tissue damage from peroxide? A lot of that depends on which type of Hydrogen Peroxide you are useing. I myself have had a run in with technical grade hydrogen peroxide that is used for hydroponic gardening. I got it splashed on my forehead and thought I had rinsed it all off, but it was also in my hair and when I sweated it ran down my forehead and onto my eyelid. And it then almost burned a hole through my eyelid. The eye was swollen shut for a week and it was one of the most painful things I have ever dealt with, and it left some serious permenant scars.
So if somebody were to get ahold of the wrong strength it really could damage a snake. But the stuff you buy at the drug store shouldn't do any damage.
Here is a picture of what hydrogen peroxide can really do.
