My copperback molted the other night, so I took a photoshoot. =)
Incredibly hard to do in the dark without disturbing her.

Both males and females grow and molt throughout their lives... just males have a habit of dying not long after sexual maturity, at least in most species.

They roll over onto their backs... after about half an hour of them pulling their legs upwards, as if they were the Incredible Hulk trying to bust through a shirt, the 'lid' of their central carapace opens and they slowly wiggle the shed skin up their legs until the new spider finally slips out. The whole process can take hours, and the spider is almost always exhausted afterwards... it then takes a couple of days for their new skin to harden and for them to regain their energy. Pretty simple process really, but it leaves the spider vulnerable to predators for a very long time, it makes you wonder how they manage to do it safely in the wild.
And yeah, the molt has scared many a keeper... finding it and thinking their spider died. =)

I see this several times per month, but i still dont completley
understand it!
What i dont understand is...how the book lungs are regenerated?
And how does the tarantula breathe during this process?
Any thoughts?
