Molting question
I have a rose haired T and he webbed up his cave entrance and has been hiding. Is it possible that he's molting? If so, how long should it take?

Re: Molting question
Molting or an eggsac.
If it's wildcaught it is possible.
Could be a while 4-6 weeks easily. Just make sure the water bowl is full and it'll be fine.

Re: Molting question
I bought him from Petco so I'm sure he was wild caught. I have a half log in his 10 gallon tank and he webbed up the front so he can't even get to the water bowl. Should I look to see what's happening or should I leave him alone? This is a pic of the tank before he webbed up the entrance. He's inside the cave.

Re: Molting question
I'd leave him alone.
If you don't smell anything coming from the tank you're fine.

Re: Molting question
He is never going to trap himself. Just making a nice little house I would think. And you would never smell him if he died. Actually, I have always seen them come out to die. A good of thumb is if you find it "dead" in the cage. Leave it in there a day just to make sure. A lot of times they flip on their back to molt and act dead. Almost threw out a couple like that.

I guess it depends on how big the T is and how they die. If they have a lot of fluids in them they do smell (IME), if dehydrated they don't. No fluids left to stink.

Re: Molting question
It really is crazy seeing them upside-down, they hold their arms stiff so it looks like a plastic spider toy just sitting there, pretty unreal. So if you see that, definitely don't throw it away lol

Re: Molting question
Only a few years if it's a male, 15-20 if female.

Re: Molting question
It depends on the species really... I have a couple Aphonopelma sp. that are 25-35 years old. G. rosea can live for about 30 years. Avics for about 15 years. (those being females)

Re: Molting question
my male Rose haired lived for about 4 years.
I have never had one my rose's weave a web to molt in, but my GreenBottle blue does and she will stay in her "house" for a few weeks.

Re: Molting question
venomous they are.... bite they can.
I tell everyone that anything with teeth (or in this case fangs) can bite.
Just new world tarantulas are more apt to flick hairs at you.
