Re: Whats a good beginner spider
A good first T.... G. rosea is a good one... so are most of the Grammys out there... like G. pulchripes(Chaco Golden-stripe) and G. pulchra (Brazilian Black) . Also Brachys make good starters like B. albopilosum(Curlyhair) , B. smithi(Mexican Red-knee) , B. vagans (Mexican Redrump), etc.
My first where a G. rosea and a G. pulchripes... I still own them today. I have had the rosea since she was only 3/4" and the pulchripes since she was no bigger than a quarter. Speck, the rosea, is now about 2 1/2" and the Chi, the pulchripes, is about 4".
Take a look at some caresheets for both, but you'll see that they are kept in the same manner. The only difference is the pulchripes will get around 7-8".
Have any other questions... just ask.

Re: Whats a good beginner spider
Some other semi good beginner species would be one from the avicularia family. The main thing Ive heard about them is that when they're smaller then about 1/2 inch they can die really easy if your not careful, but i have one that is about 1/2 inch and another one that is smaller then your fingernail atm, both are fine and eat strong. My third avicularia is about 2-3inches. This species is aboral where as the one Rept were suggesting were terrestrial.
Also expect the terrestrials to live alot longer 15+ years from what Ive read/heard, as well as grow slower. The avicularias' will live about 5 years but they will grow much faster
Here are some pics of my avics'. I dont have one of my Versi but you can easily google it, its a bright blue little guy, for now
my ~1/2 inch avicularia avicularia
my 2-3 inch avicularia metallica

Re: Whats a good beginner spider
Actually... I wouldn't suggest an Avic for a first T... Their humidity levels and air circulation needs are pretty demanding for someone that just is getting into Ts. Not too much room for error.
As for the Ts I suggested... A female can live up to 35 years for some species and for Avics, they can live for about 15-20 years for a female.
And as for your A. metallica... where did you buy her??? She doesn't look like a pure metallica... They are heavier bodied and have longer hairs like this.... (unless it's a mature male)
female

mature male

And just so the OP doensn't have to go too far for the versicolor picture... Here is my girl right after she molted....

Re: Whats a good beginner spider
It all depends on the T.
I don't really freehandle most of my Ts due to them being easily injured if they fall. If you do... make sure you're close to the ground.
Brachys can be more readily to flick hairs at you when their small, but so can most new world Ts.
Also... after that being said... even a T that is usually tolerant of handling can have a bad day.

Nxlude, Happy to see that you are asking questions before you get the animal.
Best of Luck!

Re: Whats a good beginner spider
Another fun semi beginner tarantula would be a Greenbottle Blue Tarantula (Chromatopelma cyaneopubescens). They are known as hair kickers but eat hearty and grow reasonably fast. here mine after a molt
This species are heavy webbers which is actually really cool.

Re: Whats a good beginner spider
I'm not too familiar with all the tarantula species but I will add testament that T's can have their bad days...
I've messed with lots of Rose hairs at work and they are usually pretty calm. Then one time at Hamburg, here I am showing off to some people how calm they are and it latched onto my finger and gave me a nice shot of T venom. It didn't do much besides sting for a few minutes and make my finger a little swollen but it still wasn't fun!
Oh, and the customer still bought the spider!
Just thought I'd share my story- hope you have fun with whichever species you decide to pick up (or not to pick up )
