Re: Does anyone keep solifugeds???
Like vinegaroons, correct?
I had one for a day once. His presence freaked everyone out so badly that I let it go again though. However, I'd imagine they'd be fun little critters if the appropriate precautions were taken.

Never kept them but heard they don't live long in captivity. They are too creepy for me.

No, a Camel spider aka a solifugid.
Sorry, I don't keep any of these and I don't know of anyone. It would be cool if someone on here had one. They are neat little critters!

Hm, I incorrectly thought a vinegaroon was one of them.
Either way, they're both very interesting insects. Let us know if you do end up with one!

Vinegaroons are of the order thelyphonida. They're also known as whip scorpions. They're pretty neat little bugs.
Thelyohondia is related to the order Solifugae but they're definitly seperate.
the solifugeds in my opinion are nastier and not very good for captivity. They have big chompers and deliver a ragged nasty bite that is prone to infection.
But mainly the reason they're not too good as pets is they're nocturnal and tend to hide unless it's very dark out. Meaning most pet owners would never see their hard to manage pet.

Re: Does anyone keep solifugeds???
I wasn't really worried about it being reclusive, as I am also looking to get a red trapdoor spider as well....

Re: Does anyone keep solifugeds???
Hey guys i know im stumbling into territory in which i have no experience keeping arachnids, but with that said i would have to suggest not trying to keep one of these nasty creatures (very cool creatures tho). I had more than one run in with them in Afghanistan, they're very aggressive, VERY FAST, and can get quite large, Oh yeah and those really nasty jaws/mandables whatever they're technically called Really cool to watch eat btw. just my two cents

That's what makes me own what I own!!! Large snakes, tarantulas, scorpions, true spiders, and one of these if I read up enough.

LOL True but Ive never been chased by my BCI, any spider, or scorpion unlike a camel spider. Wait till you have a dinner plate running at you and chasing you around the house... the only outcome will be a large boot on your beloved pet.
.... Im sorry they still creep me out. I had a about 10" one start crawling up my rack one day while i was passed out. i woke up to a loud thud, i looked down and saw these legs wrapping around my buddies boot from underneath.

Re: Does anyone keep solifugeds???
An Army Sergeant I'm acquainted with (dates one of my sisters) has a video he took with his cellular phone of a Camel Spider chasing a local down the street in a village outside of Kabul - or so he alleges. I'll see if I can't have him upload it and will share it with you guys.
Things are horrifying.

Re: Does anyone keep solifugeds???
Camel spiders r not cool haha. They will chase u. Everyone I know who's been deployed said that scorps are one thing, but they would rather mess with a cobra then a camel spider hahaha. They r nasty, mean, want to kill u, etc. Haha. And I've heard this from herp guys as well as others LOL.
