Just wanted to say that all you people out there that think Tarantulas are so deadly well they are not.. and for those of you who think that tarantulas kill well they dont but can if you are very young and have a breathing disorder or heart probs. or older with some kind of health probs. or if you are highly allergic to bee stings and bug bites.. you can have a really bad reaction to the tarantula bite. now there are some tarantulas that have stronger venom than others.. but if you are careless about what you do with a tarantula then you run the risk of being bittin. Yes you will have swelling and yes it will hurt, but most bites only cause a small amount of pain and are just like a bee sting.. some people just react to the bite diffrent from others. There are a lot more spiders out there that can and will kill you and they are not tarantulas.. Tarantulas make fun and intresting pets let alone great for studying and having around for children to learn from and then theres the ones that are great for holding also..I have seen a lot of people that are deathly affraid of Ts that once they are around them and really look at them or even make a attemp to hold them they realize that they are not all that bad. They just needed to be more educated and to fully understand these great arachnids.. Please dont be so fast as to judge these creatures. insted learn more about them. you might be really surprised and fall in love with a tarantula... I don't think that they are deadly myself. For me it is a "fear" of them is all. I am an arachnophobic is al basically. Why.. I dunno. Just have been , yet wasn't as a kid though. Allthough I will pick up a daddy long leg and move that type of spider np..if I can't find someone to move it for me. Of course that's after I freak over having found it basically too. lol I just won't do that with any other type arach..EEEEEEWWWW. AND I am not about to go keeping any arachs here at all either. just the though of one getting loose ...UGH.

I used to have a rosehair T. It was the coolest thing. I donated it to a friend that does education shows. I still get to mess with it every so often.
Lori, just because your terrified of them dont mean everyone else is. I am sure some of your kids would love to have a tarantula around.

LOL...Andrew that is. Have told him he can have them np ..once he moves out of my home, course also told him I wouldn't be visiting if he did keep them alaso. That being as I doubt he would let me know if one was on the loose and of course it would prolly be found by myself when there

Spiders are cool!
But for everyone that keeps snakes now that may want to get into spiders down the road, LEARN all you can now about them and what you can't use chemical wise around them.
And I am talking about what chems are common in herptoculture and most of us have, or have used in the past and possible future as many chems are deadly for the arachs.
Another note, if you ever get your home sprayed for bugs, ya have to get the arachs out or get a WRITTEN guarantee from the pest company that what they are using will not harm the animals. Otherwise you can lose all of them and be out ANY compensation, period.

I am not ANY spider's greatest fan, but I think you are 100% right about what you said bww. I also think the same goes for snakes too. I never wanted anything to do with snakes until I saw Delilah (Constrictor_Bo's boa), but when I saw her I just had to hold her and now....I love the lil critters!
As a side note, my mom was terrified of snakes, but I finally got her to the point where she would touch them (as long as they were looking the other way). She was even more likely to touch a larger snake rather than a smaller one because "I can see that one better and if it gets loose it will move slower" maybe true, maybe not, but that is how she would rationalize it. When she came to visit she actually HELD one of my little ones (Simon, my 6 month old BCI). I am so proud of how far she has come and it was all because of a little bit of education about the snakes. Way to go, Mom!

Arachnids along with reptiles are fascinating adaptable creatures.
I think that makes them really really cool.
They live in dozens of types of micro and macro habitats, and eat just as wide a variety of prey items as snakes.
I think anyone into herps has the potential to like arachnids as well.

yeah i have to definetly agree, most people who see my t's freak out, some even think they are deadly and kill you with a single bite, lol! i think its pretty amusing to watch them get paranoid and i laugh inside at their ignorance while keeping a smile on my face and explaining to them like a child that no they are'nt going to get you calm down, no their not deadly, yes i handle them, lol its great, but its people who can't control their fear that ruin the hobby for intelligent people--Jeff

Nobody has ever died from a tarantula bite.
They ask very little in the way of care. Only 1 or 2 crickets a week, and some water. No heat mats or special requirements.
They are cheap to buy, starting from just a few dollars for young spiders.
They are long lived. Females living up to 25 years.
I think these are the reasons me and blackwidow woman are addicted to them.
