Alright I think I'm gonna finally break down and get a Rose Hair since I've heard and read these are good to start with but was wanting some info on how all the other spider lovers on the site keep their's. I seen that potting soil is a sutiable substrate but was wondering what else I could use? If anything I want to set the tank up as a display type. Ok on to handling this is something I will have to warm up to see I'm not much of an Arachnid person the thought make's my hair stand on end but this is something I want to overcome! So any suggestions about how to go about picking one up would be greatly appreciated!!! I pretty much have the water thing and hides figured out but really I'm open to any suggestions on the subject! So come on give me some and turn me into a Tarantula Lover!

By no means am I a spider lover, but I did have a rose hair before. I used aspen for substrate, and she did fine. I think you can pretty much use any substrate that you would use for a snake. As far as the handling goes, take a pencil or something and gently put in towards her face. If she rears up, chances are you might get bit. Aside from that, I would put my hand down, and using the other, guide her onto my hand. No sudden movements!! Mine did fine with that, and I never got bit. Someone else should be along shortly that has more experience with them. blackwidowoman, where are you?

Ok guys im here, now as far as a rose hair goes they can be nice beginer Ts, but i would go with a Brazilian Black..G.Pulchra first.. they are expensive but well worth the money as they are extremly great Ts,,No hair flicking and wont bite,, Mine was just the best ever and would love to have more of them..or you can go with a nice grown female mexican redknee one thats been handled so its use to it and dont flick hairs as much, Mine is so use to being picked up all the time she just dont care anymore.. As for bedding go with peatmoss mix several inches deep and lightly moisten it and make sure you have a nice deep jar lid for a water dish, Some people use dishes that are just to big..Make sure you have a hide house or burrow premade out of PVC pipe. If you live in warm places year round you can use some moss from outside to decorate the cage maybe a fake vine or plant, Small light on top at one end and heat pad under the cage at another end on low, you want the temp at 72 to 75 or so and you have your perfect set up ..Just mist the cage every other few days for humidity. As for rose hairs well i just dont like them,,, some are nice and others can be real nasty, some are just a real pain in the butt! LOL.. Hope this helps.. Theres a lot of things i can tell ya but that would take up a lot of space, hehehe! Handling a Rose Hair is really nothing to worry about. They may raise their front legs in a defensive move when you first touch them, but I just ignore it. I lay my hand in front of her, and gently prod her rear legs with my other hand until she climbs on. Or if it's in an open space, just scoop it up gently with both hands.
The worst I've seen 'em do is flick hair, and that's not so bad on your hands if you just wash it off. They really do look (and sometimes act) a lot meaner than they really are.

My second spider was a rose hair. She is still very tame, and easy to handle. I would recommend a Curly hair as your first spider though, just as mine was. They are voracious eaters. tame and have nice markings.
Here is a picture of mine. He isnt fully grown yet, and it isnt the best pic.

Heh. I beg to differ. Mine is a nightmare. I have plenty of T's that I can handle, and this one sure as heck isn't one of them. About a week after I'd decided she'd acclimated, I thought I would bring her out and see how she took to handling. I used my normal method, testing with a soft bristled paintbrush.. and she did a 180 and gave me her reply:
I had to ultimately pry her fangs off of the brush. (no fun task) A few months later.. she's still a demon. She thinks she's a Haplopelma, I swear.

Well I did end up getting a Rose Hair and she has turned out to be very docile! She will almost let you turn her over on her back with a brush ! Also as far as handling she is pretty calm! Just watch out if you start putting in crickets!!

Fortunately, that's how most of them are. It's a rarity to get a mean one like I did, but it does happen. Congrats on your new pet, hope you enjoy each others company!
