OK,
I have a question.
Anyone know the average lifespan of a female Mexican Red Knee Tarantula?
I got one as a spiderling in 94 and it died last night.

So, is 8-9 years a short life for a female, from what I knew, I thought it was around 12-15 years.

From what I gather, females should live 10-15 years. It sounds like it may have died a little young, but not incredibly young.
I am sorry about your loss though.

Female smithii have been known to live beyond 20 years. Did you have it sexed by an expert tarantula wrangler? If not I would gather to say yours was a male... they usually top out near 10 years (if not bred). Though, any number of reasons could attribute to an early demise - many that have nothing to do with the level of care, unfortunately.

Well, I really wasnt 100% positive of the sex, I dont know much about them.
she/he did slow down on feeding and then started to freak out whenever I went near its cage.
Eventualy it had kicked the hairs off its abdomen.
Kinda a bummer, had this critter for quite sometime, got pretty used to having it living with us.

We had a Redknee that lived for over 20 years. She was huge, and very aggressive. Definately the meanest spider i have ever seen in my life. She was also my first.
