Generally speaking, emperors are pretty laid back and non-aggressive. However, there are always exceptions and judgement should be based on observation of the individual animal. We have one that thinks he's the devil incarnate, but he's pretty harmless - even with his aggression, he doesn't use his stinger (telson).
Are you positive the scorpion is an emperor? How old is the cousin? It's not likely that he would have to go to the hospital if it really is an emporer; their venom potency is almost nonexistent. There are even some who will argue that anaphylactic shock is not possible with an emperor's venom (it's hard to use that word referring to emps.. lol).
They are definitely a good starter scorpion!

My cousin is 20...the thing is just tiny...cute...i went in to try to possibly pick it up and it tried to pinch me lol...before we got in in his new home, it was in "attack" mode, tail up looking to strike, but he ended up just transfering it into the new cage with the plastic container the store gave him...
The poor girl at the store seemed terrified to be anywhere near them let alone have to actually reach in and get one...i told her i thought the sting was equivalent to a bee sting (as long as one isn't allergic to bee stings) and she looked at me like i was crazy...anyway, i don't think he will handle it a lot cause it says not to...
Thanks!
