Saved a spider.....
Ok, so my hubby and I spent the evening at his mom's watching a movie. Before we leave mil asks hubby if he's afraid of spiders. Don't know what hubby said exactly, but it was somewhere along the lines of yes. So I say, I'm not, what's going on. MIL has a big spider in the bottom of her pantry, and she's scared to death. So I start pulling things out (carefully) and on the back wall is this big (half dollar size, maybe a little less) black spider. I've NEVER seen one like it before. Anyhow, so I tell the hubby to get a camera because I wanted to post the pic here and see what it is, and I trapped it and carried it out into the road and pretended to step on it. Picture didn't come out Anyhow, now that I read this, I guess it was more of one of those you-gotta-be-there things. It was pretty funny. MIL was screaming and hubby was getting really mad at me because I wouldn't kill it. He actually told me "sometimes your compassion for animals sickens me". How horrible is that?!?!? It was a harmless (I think) spider that will eat all the yucky mosquitos and stuff, why kill it? ARGH

Even if a spider isn't harmless, it probably wont hurt you. Widows and Recluses only bite when they are harassed (i.e. smashing). I handle the darlings on a regular basis, and I have never been bit by a spider.
I do loathe people that smash them in front of me though =)

I don't consider myself a tree hugger per say, but okay, I'll admit I love the earth and the things that God puts on it. That includes spiders. It's all connected in its own part.
I encourage wildlife on my property even if it means the things that I don't exactly want on there because the things I don't want attract the things I do want. KWIM? Explain to your hubby that it is not a sickening thing to care about something that has it's place on earth.
What I find sickening is the sprays people polute the earth with just so they don't have to find holes in their roses for a month when there are other, maybe not so effective means of eradicating them that won't kill birds, beneficial insects, spiders, etc.
You did the right thing by putting it outside and letting it do its job so it can stick around and maybe find an out of the way corner where it will catch and eat some of those pesky garden bugs.

I should point out that I have two lizards and numerous spiders running around my home (freely). I have not seen a single cockroach or heard a cricket since I have done this.
Please, do not kill anything that wanders into your house. Bring in something that eats it.
