ok... in need of serious help here
... ive finally decided to face my long-0standing and super-overwhealming fear of spiders.
ive let 2 tarantulas crawl on me, its time for the next step.
my roommate said that when i am unable (mentally) to take care of it, he will for me (he thinks theyre cool, the freak)
heres where you come in.
what is the best breed to start on?
i want a "gentle" breed... please please please dont point me in teh direction of something thats going to try to eat me and kill me in my sleep (so no bird eating spiders or black widows, ok?)
im all ears.

I had a Mexican Red Leg for four years and he was great to handle. Carried him around in my shirt pocket and sat on my lap and when I ate he sat on the table in the window with me. Unfortunately he tried to jump to my coffee table one day and hit the floor and died. Was a sad loss. He spent most of his time in close contact with me and I never had any temperament issues with Egor.

avicularia avicularia (pinktoes) are pretty laid back, you can handle them okay and they don't freak easily.
Gramastola Rosea (Rosehairs) lots of pics of them on the forums, popular choice for beginners as well

The best possible #1 T to start out with is a Rose Hair. They have the BEST disposition and are VERY docile, medium speed moving, and dont get large.
I congratulate you and wish you luck with trying to face and overcome your fear, i, Too, am doing the same. I just got my Rosie yesterday and so far everything is going well.
here's a pic of her:
so we are both spider newbies both trying to overcome our fear...we should start a group

Perhaps you should reconsider your next step. Instead of buying an animal that you don't plan on keeping, how about borrowing one for a bit as a test run.

Get a common Texas brown tarantula, a female if you can.
.

.
... that little gal was ok with me handling her and we had just met. In captivity the ones i have seen are super nice bugs..
.

My Texas Brown moves too quick for my liking, but I've only have had her for about 6 weeks or so, I think.
I am a recovering arachniphobe also.
What I did is get a Chilean Rosehair (grammostola rosea) sling and a Giant Chaco gold stripe(grammostola aureostriata) sling. I got them small and make sure I hold them (at least) on cage cleaning day so I would get use to them as well as them to me. (it made me feel better)
