Any clue as to why 'Whites treefrog', overhere they are simply 'Common green treefrog'?

Probably the same reason you say "freshie" and we say Johnston's crocodile.
It's because Australia is the only continent that doesn't have glaciers and the lack of ice somehow scrambles your language.

Possibly our species are identified by name in the USA so there is no confusion between it and the Green Tree Frog (Hyla Cinerea) found around Florida.
This would be vice versa here. Whites would be a Common Tree Frog and the Florida species, if seen here, would likely be referred to as American Green Tree Frog or Hyla Cinerea.
