My 20 gallon high viv is on it's last leg of the journey to completion. One thing remains....what type of potting soil is best? I have a bag of Sta-Green Nursery Blend but I'm not sure if it's completely safe to use. Would it be better to use peatmoss and plain potting soil (without any additives)? Any opinions?

yeah, but this is a vivarium that will house a plethora of live plants as well as dendrobates auratus (blue).

I would use co co bedding, or plain top soil,
dont use anything with additives, it may seep into the water, or some feeder insects may eat some, and while its probably not an immediate danger to you frogs, it could cause some long term effects.

For relatively simple setups, I gotta agree, there is nothing like Bed-a-Beast! Lori discovered it, I discovered it, evidently we both love it. I guess it depends on your setup. I know people with elaborate habitats with drainage in the bottom, pea gravel, carbon, soil in layers. Mine are simple enclosed containers with bed-a-beast in the bottom, moss on top, and live, plastic and silk plants. Good luck, enjoy the blue auratus. P.s. I don't just kep them, I breed them and have had very good luck with the bed-a-beast.

hehe ldy.. I do all that also. I just use the bed-a-beast for the soil layering is all. it actually keeps moisture up better than regular potting soil does I find. YOU breed the blues??? hmmmm.... hehe

Lori,
Alas, the blue auratus, are some I do not have at the present time. What I meant was that I do breed dartfrogs in general, lol. Specifically, about 5 diff types of auratus, azureus, 4 or 5 diff types of tincs, leucomelas, and various mantellas. Have had more varieties of Dendrobates, Phyllobates, and others. New stuff is always cool, lol. Are you breeding yours, yet? I have no tads or eggs, now. I think they are reajusting after the move (from the shop).

Nope..I don't breed any of these lil things hehe. I actually only recently started keeping em even about 7 months ago I think. I want to get more of them.. I love their coloring and they are quite interesting to keep also.
