He's a couch's spadefoot toad. Very interesting little guys, they actually have a little 'barb' on their back feet that is like a fingernail which they can use to burrow into somewhat loose soil pretty quickly.

Heh, very cool looking animal, rav. We can always count on ya to find the weird animals that nobody's ever heard of before or just can't seem to find anywhere. Keep posting more pics.

They are native to much of the south west US and into Mexico. Semi-arid areas that get get yearly fall and spring flooding. So substrate is pretty simple - I'm using a soil/sand mixture to make it easily used to burrow in. He spends most of his time buried up to his eyeballs, coming out at night to peruse for food (crickets, beetles, meal worms, whatever he can fit in his mouth).
They are among the fastest life-cycled toads, they can go from eggs to tadpoles to toads in a matter of about two weeks. An adaptation necessary for survival in places where the shallow water pools only last for a short period of time before drying up.
All in all, they are pretty simple to care for. In the wild they spend most of their time buried underground, and only really become active during rainfall.

Just in case anyone is actually interested in these guys...

You can see in the pic, that black protrusion on the heel area. That gives them an uncanny ability to dig, they wiggle their back feet outwards and can vanish into soft sand or soil in a matter of about 5 seconds.
