Can these little guys change color to there surroundings? I mean, he turns from bright green when he's on the leaf's to a brown color on his back when he's in the wood hide. Is this normal or is he possibly sick. I clean the cage like crazy cause I read they aborb through there skin. I don't want any crud getting absorbed. I do the drops in the water for chlorine so I know it's not that. Any help?

Brown Coloration usally signals some sort of stress involved with Whites. May be possible you are cleaning the cage too much stressing your little buddy some. What is his setup like?

I noticed that the Red Eye Tree Frogs I brought home darkened up after they were in thier new cage for about an hour... but they still look green just a darker shade
I never came across anything about color changes with the White's or Red Eyes.
never fails as soon as you bring something new home, no matter how much research you do they are going to do something that you didnt read about

Allright. Why the heck is he turnong brown?
That's a new one on me. I was always used to seeing him green.
What are you using to clean the cage with? Is it some type of commercial cage cleaner?

White's tree frogs do turn brown when stressed or ill. It doesn't take much to stress them so as long as the cage is well equipped and all his needs are met, he should straighten up and turn back green for you.

First, thanks for the site and great info. Second I noticed that there was some editing on SteveJor's post. Don't forget my friend. You pawned this guy off on me when I wanted the tank because your wife made you get rid of your reptiles. I never asked for this one but now I got it, and I do like the little guy. I gave it a bigger cage. I went from your small tiny critter cage to a 10 gal tank. That could cause the stress from the cage transfer. I do clean the cage once a week sometimes once every two weeks. I feed him grasshoppers that I catch outside and crickets I get from the store. I use the eco earth soil that comes in bricks in his tank. I add the 2-3 drops of chlor out to his new bigger water bowl. I'm going to use a smaller dark light now for heat. I got rid of the repti bark that came with it because it would mildew and would stick to him. Not the mildew but the bark. I added a hide since he had none. Apperently I was getting yelled at by you stevejor, but I just showed all the things you didn't have for that frog. I'm guessing it is stress. I will take measures to lower the stress by changing his location from the living room to my bedroom. How often should I clean his tank? And he goes from green to brown and back to green. He's not constantly brown. Just FYI. To those for the help, thank you very much. That site is great for a starter on amphibians. If you can just answer the upkeeping question on how long I should clean the cage. That would be great and I'll see if I can't turn this color around to happy green.....

On the cleaning thing I think once a week and every 2 weeks in a 10 gallon tank is a bit extreme. Try this go about a month and this should straighten him out. Unless you notice a smell of amonunia (sp). I Have kept 4 tree frogs in a 10 gallon tank at once and monthly cleaning was very efficent. But they were the small green tree frogs from North America. But if its only him in the 10, monthly should be fine just spot clean the poo if ya want to keep it looking good.

Hey Cappy, the edit was to change one word to heck. I used the word where the fire and brimstone and the red guy with the pitchfork lives instead of using heck and evidently it ticked off a mod. Didn't think that was a "naughty" word here. I wasn't attacking you if that's what you thought by seeing the edit.

steve, I apologize. I thought you were attacking me like I was a bad keeper. I had a bad day and reading that didn't help. Again. Sorry.

hmmm. i have 1 white's at home and 1 at my university and both of them turn brown periodically - usually when the humidity is the highest. the 1 at home usually turns brown at night. the 1 at my university has been brown ever since he moved into his new habitat about 4 months ago. this new cage is pretty high humidity and he still eats great and is active and chubby (but no overly so). i've done a lot of research on the web (and i know a lot of sources out there aren't worth crap) and i've never read anything about white's color changes being because of stress or illness and the 2 white's i have have always been healthy but periodically turn brown. and, like i said, the one has been brown for months and he acts fine. should i be concerned about him staying brown?

I do have to say that I have owned 4 White's tree frogs and all of mine where brown under their log during the day and green at night when active. I kept mine for over 2 years, until I had to make room for more critters. (then I found them homes and Faze)
I agree with Shadrach on the cage cleaning issue. Just clean water always!
Good luck!

hey reptscue! my white's that is brown now stays under a half-log hideaway all day, too! i really don't think with white's that the color is due to stress or illness (unless, of course, the frog is purple or something! :P ). i've never heard anything about that and white's are pretty darn hardy. i've seen plenty of brown ones at the petstore, too. of course just cuz an animals looks a certain way at the petstore doesn't mean that's how they're SUPPOSED to look. sorry, i just have problems with most petstores and their treatment and sales of animals (especially herps). go breeders!!!
anyway, i think brown white's tree frogs are completely normal and healthy - just watch for other signs of ill health.

Hi, I was reading through this and I keep some whites too, I agree that they can turn colors from stress but also noticed a change due to humidity and temperature changes. Maybe when he is on the leaves area in the cage he is green because he is getting more light and when he goes around the bark hide it is cooler and darker and he turns browner. I have noticed mine turn a little browner occasionally if the temp drops or they are in a hide log. I would say that the color change is nothing to worry about as long as he isnt staying brown all the time and he is still active and eating. I am not a frog expert though, this advice is only from my personal experiences with them.

i agree with you, gemisnake. unless other un-healthy attributes present themselves (bloating, redness/irritation of skin, not eating, loss of coordination/imbalance/disorientation, etc), color change in white's tree frogs is normal (unless the color changes to neon orange, of course :P ).
