I was wondering if it is safe to use astro turf in my pacific tree frog enclosure. I could put some moss over some areas so its not all astro turf. Most of the time they're up on their branches. Thanks Oh happy friday the 13th. Hope everyone is nice and safe. Yeah I'm superstitious.

frogs pee constantly and astroturf is impossible to keep clean without chemicals that will kill your frog. What you need is at least half the cage with a filtered aquatic area and the other part semi dry but damp with gravel and moss. How exactly are they set up now? just in a cage with a water bowl? frog skin is like a sponge. It absorbs every contaminant, toxin, chemical etc that it comes in contact with. Without a filtration system all it takes is a couple of days for you to neglect cleaning and replacing the stagnant water with clean dechlorinated water and they are toast. They are very delicate and way easier to kill than to keep alive. I suggest you lose a little sleep the next few nights and read all you can about these guys.

I got the astro turf idea from a care sheet. I've been reading for like a week already. I have a waterfall in the tank a arboreal pond that sticks to the side and a bowl with a rock in it. I clean the cage about every 2-3 days. I had gravel in there before but someone told me to take it out because the frogs might ingest the rocks when they go and try to grab a bug. I know that frogs absorb everything thats why they're tank is constantly getting cleaned I wait a couple of days between cleaning because I don't want to stress them out to much. There is only a very small portion where the astro turf is accessible.

Does anyone think that this is a bad set-up?

i would suggest a set up mimicing as near as possible ...nature... hopefully your enclosure is large enough, and just use clean, inert soil, mosses, and furniture(i.e:branches, live plants, rocks...), and either a pond/pool that you clean daily or every other day, or a filtered pond...does your waterfall thingy include a filter? anyhow, think "nature", and try your darndest to come close to replicating it for your froggy friends, and all should work out just fine... good luck

I got the same ? Brett...if you read this again. I just picked up a white's tree frog from someone on this site and they gave me a bag of four paws nature bark. I would like to go to those little moss bricks. I'm going to get him a bigger cage, a tall cage. I've been reading up on them but substrate is key. The stuff he uses now sticks to him. small tiny cage. anyhow, will those moss bricks that you add water do be a good substrate?? thanks....
