I was wondering if frogs in general need uv light to survive. Any feed back would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I don't recall frogs needing UV, but as there are so many species, there may be one or more that need it..
If ya mean the bull frog you have, I think they are more nocturnal but may be a little off...
(bad headache, refusal to think and good meds... )

Bull frogs dont need exposure to UV, but im sure in limited amounts it cannot be harmful.
As Eddie said, bf's are pretty much nocturnal.

I have kept them with and without UV. I've found that with a "normal" daily light cycle, they seem to be happier and more active, croak more in the evenings - but its not necessary for their survival. With some toads, I've found that UV seems to bring out their natural colorations a bit more - and the same with green tree frogs and white's that change colors normally anyway, they seem to appreciate the UV as well.

Thanks for all the replies. I was wondering because I'm keeping some pacific tree frogs without a uv light. The only light I use is the light from the house. It seems to be working out just fine, because they croak up a storm in the evenings. Its amazing such little things can make such a big noise.

I believe that the light is more benificial for any plants in the cage...and not so much for the frogs skadi....that's what I'm told by some of the larger breeders anyway.

The lighting cycle is the most important thing.
For plant growth the Kelvin rating on the bulb is the most important thing. 6500K bulbs will get anything to grow. For really excellent plant growth try compact floursent fixtures. www.ahsupply.com sell some economical conversion/retro fit kits.
