Whoever told you that was wrong. Spadefoots have vertical pupils, not horizontal. Spadefoots also don't have paratoid glands behind the eyes/ears like this guy does.
Who's hand is holding it? i.e. how big it is? Based strictly on coloration, it looks like a Texas toad to me.

Spadefoot's spade is actually hard material, like a fingernail.
I'm with J, it looks like a Texas Toad. I just shot a pic of one of these at the zoo on Saturday:

Sorry.. should have put something in the pic for size comparison J. The hand holding it belongs to an adult man btw..if that helps at all.
Rav.. Your pics aren't working at all for some reason here
Thanx for the input though on the ss. it wasn't labeled as this specific ss where i got it either Now I know definately I gather though ...

He's a cute lil bugger anyways Just wish he wouldn't "hide" himself so well that we gotta tear the whole thing up to find him is all lol. After we removed EVERYTHING from the cage today..found him under the water bowl..UGH. Interesting just how they get themselves buried going backwards into the substrate actually.

If that fella is an exotic , (and an Australian spadefoot) the
pupils would be horizontal.
I take it this guy is a U.S. native???

AAAhhh!...Texas , that'd be the biggest state n'all would'nt it?
Yes I've got some knowledge of U.S. geography.hehehe
You said it was from a pet shop and I don't know my U.S. frogs so
I didn't want to make the assumption of it being your local is all.
He looks real similar to a 'Northern Spadefoot ' from oz btw.

It does look vaguely similar to the AU N. Spadefoot, but I find it -highly- unlikedly that an exotic species like that would randomly turn up in a US pet shop, muchless one that is rarely found in the US at all. My bet goes with the Texas Toad. They are extremely common, and sold as pets quite often.
As for caging Lori. You are best just going with a diggable substrate like BedOBeast, a water dish and maybe a rock. Don't bother with any other decorations. I keep my toads like that, they do just fine... but most of the time they will be buried under the substrate somewhere. Its just not worth the effort of fancying up the cage just to tear it apart every time you want to see them. Not to mention, they'll dig up a lot of stuff too... so if you put in fake plants or a nice rock area, usually it'll just get demolished by rampaging toad. In 10 years of herping Texas, I have never seen a Toad that looked like that one.
But, I dont pay a lot of attention to toads.
See too darn many to look that closely.

They're found pretty much all over TX, but since they're nocturnal they spend most of their day buried in sandy soil. By far the Gulf Coast Toad is more common here though... and seen a lot more often.
Most of the ones I've seen are more greyish than green like that... but I've seen some green ones too, like that one from SA Zoo.
