Mine two did this as well, they just roamed about on the land and freaked if I stuck them in the water. I lowered their water level to about 5 inches, removed the piece of cork bark i'd been using as a floating island for them and replaced that with lots of broad leafed plants (real ones) this mean't they could get out of the water onto a plant leaf if they wanted to but they had to enter the water to get anywhere. They are in the water a lot more now and seem happier.

Hi guys, this looks like the exactly the thread I need. I'm thinking of getting some fire-bellied newts myself. I'm wondering whether they will do well in an aquarium, with just a branch or plants for land area? How deep should the water be? In the shop they usually leave them in rather shallow water, but from what I've read, they are almost fully aquatic. Thanks!

I mine in an aquarium, I have various aquatic plants that rise to the top, and they cling to the leaves. I use a product called turtle dock; it looks like stone but floats, and has brackets with suckers that keep it in place. They spend a lot of time on it you can buy it at most pet stores, but heres the web page anyway http://www.zoomed.com/html/docks.php
