Questions about Fire Bellies
I have just taken a newt in, so to speak, and have a few questions for anyone experienced with them.
First, I have been online researching Newts and how to care for them, so have a general idea of what to do. The one I have is a Chinese FB, I'm pretty sure, but his tail is much more pointed than rounded, which makes me think he's a Japanese FB. But his back is flattened and the glands on the back of his head are not that prominent. Are there any other distinguishing characteristics of either one to go by? He is small, maybe three or four inches from tail to nose.
For now,he is in a small plastic carrier with treated water (about 5 inches deep), and an inverted rocks glass for him to climb on. This is not permanent, but will have to do for now. Also, I have learned that temp is a huge factor with newts, so my solution has been coldpacks from the freezer, placed in back of and underneath the carrier. I live on the Gulf Coast, so keeping the right temp for the newt will be a challenge this summer. So far so good, the thermometer has not crept above 70 degrees. Any other cooling ideas for when his living quarters are bigger? Aside from buying a chiller?
He has stayed out of the water so far. Will that change with a new, more suitable habitat? Also, the websites told me what to feed him, but nowhere did I see how much.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
