Spent some time out in the field today and for early March did pretty well. The wood frogs have begun their explosive breeding cycle that will last for only about a week or two. The pair pictured below are in amplexus. Notice the mosquitoes feeding on the frogs.
Also found:
Wood Frogs - Too many to count
Spotted Salamanders - 7 adult males, all the vernal pools are covered with maculatum spermaphores
Spring peepers - only saw 3 but heard many more
American Toad - just one, it's still a little early for toads
Chorus Frogs - only found 2 and heard several more
We have the 17 year locus do out by the middle of March

Looks as if its going to be a good year!
