If you turn your light off and take the temp directly over the heat mat, you may find that this reading alone reaches 80 to 90 degrees......well I know mine does, so I think your bulb might be a bit strong because the hot spot shouldn't get hotter than 95 degrees really. Experiment with a lower wattage bulb or see what happens if you move the light away slightly from the heat mat. Keep checking your temps. I've got 3 thermometers in my tank at present and I keep moving them around all the time to find the true hottest and coolest points because they aren't always where you expect them to be. A thermostat is a good idea...I've just ordered one for mine cos my temps are getting too low.
