our life is gone...
well, for those of you who knew my husband (faze) and i knew our love for birds, and knew our baby, mac a bone. he was a medium sulfer crested cockatoo .we didnt know, but ever since we got him, he had an infection from eating the wrong foods. well, about a month ago he fell and broke his wing. we searched and searched for a good vet. we finally found one, and took him in to have surgery on his wing. the vet said it was a 50/50 chance of it actually healing his wing, but he in general would be fine. well, they usually keep them over night due to making sure they are stable before they come home. well i called before they closed to get an update, and they said he came out of it so quickly that if we wanted we were more than welcome to come and get him. so, we raced to go and get our baby. they said it would be better off if he was at home anyways.. well..to make a long story short, he came home and seemed a little out of it, which was to be expected of course..he just came out of surgery. i sat up with him until 2:45am this morning because i was worried, and wanted to make sure he got some sleep. well, 15 minutes later, joe (faze) wakes me up hysterically because bone had just died. he died in the middle of joe and i, approx. 10 minutes after i fell asleep. he was still warm when we found him.
good news is, the vet said he had been fighting it for so long because he was so happy with us..other wise, if not for the surgery he would of only lasted maybe 2 months more. after they checked him out, she said the infection had been there for quite a while. and she said shes almost sure it was there when we got him, and by us changing his diet from seed, and adding fruits and veggies it only helped save him, but he was already to far gone. and no way to check for this illness, only to open him up. doesnt show in blood tests, and didnt show in the xrays. quote from Dr. Kordon, " im sure his insides look a #$%^$%^$%^$%^& of a lot better now, then what they did when you first got him, you did a wonderful job with maintaining a sick bird for 2 years, and not knowing it."
"birds show no sign of illness like that"
well..it all adds up now. his intensive feather plucking when we got him was because he was in pain. us changing his diet, and him bieng happy seemed to help a bit, but only prolonged his death. i miss him terribly, and we dont know what were gonna do with out our mac-a-bone.. he was our life, our pride and joy, one of our children
R.I.P. Mac bone..we love you very much.. 11-22-03
thank you for those of you who took the time to hear me ramble.
